I took my chameleon Mojo to the vet to see about his eye closing and his bubble blowing. The vet gave him some Baytril yesterday and gave him some deworming meds and i am going back in two weeks for a follow up. His eyes have been opening up much much more but when i got home from work today, he was pitch black. I gave him his Baytril and misted him down. When i put him back in his cage, he was still a dark and his left eye bulged out a little bit a couple of times. Almost as if it inverted or like a frogs throat. Any ideas???

It is just cleaning the eyes out. Why did the vet give baytril?????

I would recomend increasing mistings and soaking the chameleon with the spray. Spray at the eyes and allow him to clean them out. I pause when they close their eyes then I wait until they are open then spray them.

Did the vet do a fecal or do they always throw poison at everything to see what sticks?

Mist more , get a new vet only things I can think of.

I would check the bulb you are using.. not your uvb bulb but the one for heating.. some bulbs can cause blindness and irritation.

I brought in some fecal and it was a little runny. i was told on here that a 60 watt bulb for heat lamps was good to use. what would you recommend? Im glad he was only cleaning his eyes. I was a little worried. Should i just stick with spraying warm water when he eyes open? And also, should i soak him in warm water? If so, what would be good to use? a bowl or something of that sort?

Don't soak him just spray him down is what I meant. The bulb sounds ok but wouldn't hurt to swap it out or make sure it isn't flickering. He should get extra water while on the baytril.

Did they test the fecal and was anything found. The dewormer is no big deal but I am curious why baytril .

As for the heating bulb i would still go get a bulb designed by a reptile company.. a trip to your local pet store and about 5 bucks should do it.. they have heating bulbs for reptiles that are blue and meant for that purpose..

I respectfully disagree to me that is a waist of money.

He said it he may have an infection or the beginnings of a respiratory infection. He didnt tell me much about the fecal, just investigated it a little. The bulb is brand new, i used to use one of those dark purple heat bulbs but someone said use a 60 watt household bulb. The cage seemed a little dim with the purple bulb.

Your bulb is fine.;) Make sure you follow the course of baytril all the way through since it is already started.

Good to know! so you think he was just dehydrated? i didnt know you had to mist them more often while on baytril

Dehydration may be part of it but I think he just wants to clean out the eyes. If the vet found the start of an infection that could have him closing his eyes. I was mostly just referencing the eye bubbles. He may be closing them because he just doesn't feel good.

It is important to provide extra water as baytril can be hard on the kidneys. Spraying his eyes will give him some extra water to clean with.

I was a little concerned when it sounded like the meds were given for no reason. If the vet had a reason that's another story.

Well hopefully he pulls through and starts to go back to his normal self. Ill keep him hydrated and misted down often along with his regular meds. thanks for the help!
