Misting times

heyheys, okay so im not going to be around all the time and i don't currently have a drainage system set up, so i was wondering if 15 second misting are appropriate about 5-6 times a day? i also have a dripper as back up, OR should i have longer times but short frequencies? BTW i have a mistking and a 2x2x4 cage

Thanks!

I mist for 30 seconds every 1 & 1/2 hr. I dont have a big drainage tray but do have a water proof bottom with paper towels on it. This gets the whole cage damp but doesnt flood it. I too have a dripper thatdrips into a screen covered tupperware container which has a drain pipe that goes into a empty milk jug. This works well for me to keep the humidity up;) I too have a Mist King:D

I own a Mist King, and currently am using one nozzle in a 2 ft. x 2 ft. x 1 ft. cage.

I mist for 2 minutes, every 2 hours (9 AM, 11 AM, 1 PM, 3 PM, 5 PM).

There is a tiny bit of water build up, and a tiny bit of leakage out of the bottom PVC panel (I don't have any holes drilled into it). To account for the leakage, I just have a lid from a rubbermaid tub underneath to catch the drips.

I dont wanna hijack the guys thread... But silicone will fix the leak. & what type cham do you have in that small a cage? The leak explains why there is no build up;)

Im not sure how humid it is in the DFW area right now, anytime Ive been there its been quite muggy though. I think your suddested schedule will work, but I would throw a 1-2 min mist in, just before the 6hr mark. If you are using a dripper Ill think it will be fine until you figure out drainage;)

i mist alot less than others,
8 am 1min
10 am 1min
12pm 15 sec
1201 1min30sec
2pm 1min
430 1min
630 45sec

a few people have questioned how little i mist but if you saw my cham urate you would be happy :) ( well as happy as huge white urate can make you LoL )

i do not have a dripper. what type and how old of a cham?? well i do but i dont use it very often

looks pretty good, i might add a stick or some vines lower in the cage that way your cham can get up from the floor easy, without haveing to use the screen
and you misting schedul could work i might take the 30sec mistings upto 45-1min.
and if your cham ever shows any signs of dehydration be sure to up it a bit

I had this same question when starting out. But the thing is, it is really subjective to the humidity in your area and what you want to do.

I am in DRY AZ and run 1-2 cool mist humidifiers in the room with the chams at all times. I run one usually unless a cham is shedding then I bump up to two.

My normal schedule is:
Lights on 6am
6:30am -- 5min
945am -- 3min
1200pm -- 5min
245pm -- 5min
530pm -- 3min
Lights out at 6:15PM

Unless I am trying to hydrate a cham then I change the first and possibly the 4th misting to 15min.

I mist at 730am 3min. 1030am 2min 1230pm 1:45min 230pm 2min and 530 1:30min. Lights on at 7am lights off 730pm. From what I take you have your lights on at 5am and off at 10-1030pm that's too much time for lights to be on. Even if you did 5am to 7pm but IMO that's too many hours with lights on for it being winter. I don't put the misting nozzle facing the whole cage just a portion with my chams basking spot left unmisted.

Depends on your viv set up and whats in it...

I have an exo terra 3foot (length), by 2foot (depth) by3 foot (height)... it has lots of live plants and branches for him to climb about on...

My lights come on at 0830, heat lights on at 0900 and then my first mist is set for 0930... so it allows him time to wake, bask and then drink. It only comes on for 20seconds in the morning.

My next mist is at midday, it comes on for 10 seconds, then off for 15 seconds, then on for a further 20seconds.

My final mist is in at 1800 and the mist comes on for approx 20 seconds... some may argue this is not enough... but providing your chameleons poop is brown and a section of it is white... you know he is dirnking... and mine is def drinking plenty :)

... the ammount you mist depends on your chameleon and what his/her misting schedule has been since they were little... some may need it to "rain" for longer to encourage them to drink... some may lap it up within a few seconds of seeing the drips...

In an ideal world I would let it mist for 30mins a day, that way it seems more natural... but this would flood his viv big time... basically mist for as little or as long as you want... just make sure he/she drinks... if you have a automisting system just let it do its thing and check the poop... if there is a white part to it... your chameleon is drinking and whatever your misting schedule is... be in 10 seconds a day or 1hour a day, your chameleon is fine. Just make sure you keep the humidity in the right zone.
