Mistakes made????

Nobody does everything right on their first Chameleon no matter how much preparation and research they do (just my opinion). So with this in mind I am really curious as to what mistakes you or friends made (case you don't want to admit it was you :) ) purely as a learning tool for myself and numerous others who will no doubt be getting their first chameleon and getting incorrect advice and assuming it is correct

Mealworms. I fed my first chameleon ALOT of mealworms because they were cheap / easy to breed for myself. I'd say half his diet, in his early years, was mealworms. I also provided part of his water via dripping icecubes - another bad idea. There weren't many resources to learn from way back then. Its remarkable he lived so long as he did - which I suspect was because he also had a range of wild caught feeders and no expense spared for regular vet visits.

Just a few days ago...

Cleaning cages, thought i had the cage secured on my male oustaleti. I never come home for lunch but on this day i just thought what the heck im in the mood for a deli lunch meat sandwich. I come home and see the oust's door open. I gasped and ran for the open topped totes. To my disbelief.........There he sat. I yelled a few cuss words on the top of my lungs. I knew what had happened. One B.thamnobates male and 7 young panthers were consumed.

A mistake that still makes me sick of my negligence.

Sorry to hear that. It gets better with time. Maybe this will help take the sting out....

I came back from the first day of a reptile expo where I had a booth set up. I never leave animals in cages there, so I brought them home in those plastic shoebox containers with loose fitting lids. I dropped them off and decided to go back out for Taco Bell. Came home and the cat had knocked over the stack and made a snack out of 30+ two month old bearded dragons. Didn't eat them, just mutilated them and left parts all over the house. Needless to say, I didn't have much to sell the next day.
