Okay, update...
Think i might have come up with the answer, seems pretty stupid and obvious but never really noticed before as i was paying attention to him only really. I've been watching him for the past few hours and he's been up and down his cage right to the top and back to the floor and he has been moving the substrate.. his not digging though, i think he's trying to get through the glass there, because theres a plant on the floor outside it and he can obviously see it and wants to get to it lol
