Laying Substrate

I've looked on the past 5 pages and all I found were the following:

1. half and half of sand and peat moss
2. washed play sand (moistened)

Is there anything else that is recommended for females to lay their eggs in?

My Females been getting FAT. She hasn't been near my Male and her diet hasn't changed at all. Is it possible that she has eggs in her? (She's about 10 months old now). Thanks in advance. :)

I meant to also put that for the past week she has not had sand in her cage, for the reason that the sand was starting to make my room smell so it had to be taken out and thrown away. We are planning on going out on Thursday and picking up the right sand/mixture which would be safer for her to lay eggs in, if it came down to that.

Next Thursday?
I wouldn't wait that long. You should get this set up for her today.

You need to put something in there ASAP. Play sand should not smell at all. I mix half play sand with half Bed-a-Beast(cocnut fiber).

I wish I could. I don't have any money until Thursday.
If I get money before Thursday I will go out and pick the stuff up.
But until I have it I can't do anything.

Scrape up a few dollars-Playsand is super cheap. If you wait too long she will die eggbound.

How do you wash the playsand? Just rinse it?

I can call someone when they get off work and see about borrowing some money. But thats like 5 hours from now. She should be okay till then, right.

She should be fine until then-it is just impossible to tell when they will lay exactly. Just rinsing it is fine.

If she isn't pacing the cage and acting funny (diggin, not eatting, not moving, ect...) you're probably ok for a bit. Not to say that you shouldn't set her up immediately, but you can tell when she is ready to lay by her behavior.

All he said is they are looking fat... right? You didn't say she wasnt eating or pacing, or digging right? So, no need to panic, just get her set up ASAP

BTW - i have used potting soil, peat moss, and sand for veileds and I found play sand to be best.

Good luck

She's hardly been moving for the past few days. Comes out, sits on her vine, goes down to eat, climbs back up and sits for the rest of the day and then moves down to her sleeping place when she's ready for lights out.

But thats what she normally does, She's been getting fat thou, only reason why I was worried about her.

Thanks. My BF is going to price some sand when he's at work tonight and get back to me.

Lowes and Home Depot have play sand. Around here it's about $5 for 50lbs. A 5 gallon bucket shouldn't run you more than $5-$6 there also.

Probably not. That's 4 gallons. She should have about 10-12" to dig down, though I've found that no matter how much I put in, mine burrows all the way to the bottom and lays there.

Okay so I will try to pick up a bigger container for the sand, thanks again.

I want to keep her from becoming egg bound, she's our first chameleon, belongs to my BF (b-day prezzie) would be a shame to see her die because of something easily prevented.

You shouldn't have to wash PLAYsand...its usually already washed when you get it. Other sands used for laying patios, etc. are not washed though...but I don't recommend using them either.

Okay I thought I read something about having to wash the playsand in a different thread. maybe i miss read it. :) Thanks for letting me know. Saves me alot of hassel

I'm sure I've read that too...but I have used it for years and never washed it.

There is one brand produced by Kings that has a white bag with red, blue and yellow sand box toys on it that I like to use. It has never caused any problems...even when ingested.

I look and try and find that.

Your supposed to keep the laying sand moist right? Will misting it keep it moist enough?

I called someone and they are going to come with me to get a bigger bucket and some sand so that she can have a place set up hopefully tonight if not tomorrow.
