So there was a thin string hanging from the roof of his mesh cage, and he starts chewing on it, so I reach in and gently pull it away. But when he sees that the "worm" is trying to get away, he starts yanking on it and flaring up with mean colors! I finally got it away from him. I just didn't want to pull any teeth out.

More dangerous is that you could pull his tongue out. If there is anything like that, that he can get tangled on it needs to be removed... Next time that happens try a MUCH less invasive tactic such as misting or dangling an actual bug in front of him because that "tug" could be you pulling on his tongue and damage to that could result in him losing it... JMHO
