Hello to all my chammm loversz!

Well heres the thing, i know this might not n probaly shld not be in these forum but i GOT A HUGGEEE QUESTION I WANNA ASK ALL OF YOU GUY'S!

im just a new experience chameleons owner and after doing all my research and breacking night reading about them i had fanaly when out and found one i wanted, shes a female vield chameleon about 7month old already and i have her for a few months now and well no shortly after this found a 30day old male vield that i saw in the same pet shop i bought mys first in, and i just had to have them. But this forum its not about them i really grew this devotion and love for them and all chameleons in general and well here the thing, im on vacation in p.a with my family and since i even brought my chamm's with me i decided to go to petsmart to check out if they had anything new and to buy some food for them, and well heres the hardest part i noticed the had vield and jacksons chameleons, and well i saw the only chameleon they had wich was one a jackson and i saw him or her ? not sure but she look so sad and bad in there, they had her with just a bowl of water with a air stone and he just looked so sad that i left feelings reall sad about him, just because of my love to chameleons. now before i got my 30days old male vield named Oscar there also was a nice huge good looking bright green jackson and even then i just apreciated that fact that i got to see one soo good looking up closes it wasnt like i when all crazy trying to buy him too, but now that the wife keeps telling me how nice this jackson was im really thinking about it, specialy since she doesnt really connect with lizzards but does apreciated the chamm we do have even tho they r my [= but W.E BIG QUESTION is wdf am i suppost to do!? x_X Shld i tottaly go save his life a waste 90bucks on him to try to save him? or shld i not even bother wasting money on the jackson , he was brown and had his eyes clossed soo sadd for the pore little one but if u guys can tell me our Opinion that would be soo apreciated!! i i'm already housing one male and female vield seperately taking up another one will be a huge decition and reponsability what do you guys think !? please i only got 24hrs to make up my mind on this. thank you all soo much for taking the time to read this and the other forums that helped my chammm soo much! they are all doing wounderfully by the way if you guys want pics let me know ill take some for you guys thanks - shine

i wouldnt i got a cham in the same boat as that one he died last night because of the poor treatment he had cause the pet store i didnt know what they were doing. but its up to you but you have to remember if u buy that chameleon you are funding them to buy more and do the same thing.

That was difficult to read. Anyways, dont get the animal. By purchasing it you will be giving the store money for making the animal sick. That just shows that they can keep the animals however they want and people will still buy an animal even if its on its death bed because of the store. Dont pay a cent for it! If they give it to you for free, that's great. If not, just leave it there. You dont want to help the store continue its cycle of abuse.

I appreciate what you're wanting to do and you'll do what ever you fell is right, but please chill with the profanity. We have young members on this forum. Please and thanks. Good luck with whichever route you choose!

I understand wanting to rescue the animal in the petstore...but that's something you should only do if you are fully able to provide for the animal immediately. If it's going to be difficult for you, then steal yourself and walk away.

I mean i can I'm just not a jackson type of guy i love my vield the only reason am even thinking about it , its cause of how bad the little guy looked and how cute and unlike every other jackson he looks just a verry hard decition and trust me w.e life i give him or her im sure its going to be better than the store hes been there more than a month? -___- just a verry sad thing

If you have the money and space, I'm all for it. The care is different but not difficult. The basics are pretty much the same except for temperatures and humidity. The Jackson's wants it cooler (basking temp at 83-85, bottom of the cage as cool as 60) and WETTER...a fogger would not be going too far.

You could convince them to give it to you for almost nothing, nurse it back to health if possible, and then sell it to somebody who actually does want a jackson. It all depends on how much time you have

It sounds like u asked a question u already know the answer to ;) go get it care for it. if its not for u. Rehoming him here is usually a quick easy process!

I wouldnt even purchase anything from the store if they treat animals that way (I personally feel you should support big box stores for this reason.) Try to get him for free. That would be the best option. Make it known that you are upset about the animal and his care (but do it professionally!)

You cant stop all animal abuse and when you purchase this chameleon, that just opens a new spot in the store for another to be treated the same way.

While its not your job to fix every animal being treated poorly elsewhere, that poor baby doesnt deserve to be treated like crap in protest of bad petshops; my opinion!

I would suggest not buying it. Asking for it for free will result in a rejection. Also why do you buy your feeders from a corporation? They are over priced and unhealthy. I would recommend buying from a small local pet store if one is present or ordering online from a good producer.

In all fairness regarding feeders. I get mine from petsmart and here they are the best pricing fo crickets, and healthy. I tried a small petstore who actually knows what they are doing when it comes to their animals BUT their crickets were the black ones, and they were all on their death bed.

But what happens to the next one they get. The same thing, except they got paid for treating them like crap. Stores work on supply and demand. If none are purchased, there is no demand so they will not get anymore.

What I think is you should do what you want... We aren't going to be able to decide for you because we don't know your life as to how much money space and time you have. So like others said, if you have the means . Do it, if you are lacking I wouldn't . Just same place it's in but in loving environment. Also every animal in those awful pet stores are sickly and mis treated - not any spicific store- but I know the ones like that where I live and I refuse to go there to buy pets or even food for them. You can't save everything it's sad I know but... I saw a group of poorly housed dirty naked rats but oh my goodness I would never buy all the little creatures. It's awful tho how some stores treat their animals. Just life so save what you want or if you cant pray it'll find a home... Someone always buys the animals. If they don't then the fact they died before being sold means you would probably suffer heart break because they ruined the poor thing beyond repair. Good luck

I agree 100%. You could change a life of this one chameleon, but if they make a profit on treating animals this way, why would they bother to change it? It would be a death sentence on other chameleons they will purchase and keep in terrible conditions.

If i were you I would talk to them and point out what they do wrong and say the jackson won't last long and need to be treated due to their bad husbandry. If they give you him for free, you can take care of him.

Best of luck with whatever you choose to do! :)

If you can afford the setup for another chameleon, and you have the space, I say go for it.

However, I also agree that you shouldn't fund the big name pet stores... so why don't you start a petition or something to keep animals of this type out of petsmart, petco, etc.? Do the research that is needed to get the ball rolling and you will have plenty of signatures (and proofreaders/editors) from this website.

Sure, you will be supporting the pet store right now, but long term you could have a positive impact that keeps other animals out of the store, or at least demands better treatment... All while saving that poor creature!

You already have the knowledge and most of the supplies to care for another chameleon.. let us know how it all works out, good luck!

edit: Hmm the petition might actually be a good idea.. it's too late for me to write it up right now because I have work in the morning (it's 2:30AM) so if anyone is interested go for it! Maybe we can work on something together tomorrow? Let's save some chams!

A petition is a good idea. Ive read too many times how you guys in US saw a poorly looking cham in the pet shop. I don't think I can be much help, but you have my support!

I'm in NY too, hello! I feel your pain not being able to support small businesses for reptiles. I buy virtually everything for mine online, usually through one of the site sponsors, it feels good supporting someone who actually thinks about the welfare of reptiles and feeders, rather than just profit.

Not sure where in NY exactly you are, but I have an excellent reptile vet in Mount Vernon.
