Just curious whay everyone liked to use and how much? i was told by one of the sellers to switch out bulbs everyone year for higher output of uvb rays. mines due in jan or feb cuse i purchased an old one which i didnt know but the person at the shop said i should switch it out. its the zoo med 5.0 longer style bulb rite now. but its $40 at the shop i dont wanna do that lol

The UVB bulbs, fluorescents due have to be switched out every six months. They still give out light, but the uvb is no longer helpful. The mvb (mercury vapor bulbs) last one year, but they aren't cheaper and they are a lot hotter and I don't believe they are recommended for Chams. I'm fairly new to chams, not UVB bulbs.

Arcadia here , and just the light changes the whole environment compare to when I used the reptisun 5. 0. I got the 22" around $89 with shipping but they are awesome... Good luck

Yep, read a lot of good things on the arcadia. Just contacted them to see if they carry the 48 icnh T5 HO 6%. Hoping so as I have a couple of fixtures from my fish tank days I hope to put to use.

I use the Reptisun 10.0 bulbs, but the 5.0 are fine too. Get them on Amazon or something, they are much cheaper. Mine would be almost $50 for a 4' long fluorescent bulb but I get them for about $20 online.

Mostly 48" Arcadia 6% and 12% t5HO bulbs, but I still have a few 10.0 and 5.0 reptisuns that are being phased out..

Arcadia is superior to all imo.

Hi Italian Chameleon,
Those are the Arcadia Mercury Vapor bulbs.
They are great... and project heat and UV.

I now sell those in the US and LOVE them.

And some cham owners use those with fantastic results.

But many cham owners also go with the flo. linear Arcadia tubes... and then use dome lights with incandescent (or halogen) bulbs for heat.

Either way.. I think you will want some flo. lighting no matter what.... if you are creating a whole environment and growing live plants.
The whole environment approach is the direction the WHOLE reptiles hobby is headed.
No more sad "lizard in a box".
Plants, changing light patterns (dawn & dusk), misting and even Rain.. and more plants!

You are lucky to be in the UK because that is where (in my humble* opinion :D.) the worlds best reptile products company is.
Arcadia in Red Hill. (Just south of London.)

To see their UV charts and what bulbs to use ....
here is the link to their species specific UV set up LIGHTING GUIDE web page(s):

Cheers!
And Happy Holidays!

*.. ok .. ok.... so sometimes my opinions are not so humble :p ... LOL:D

UV Lights

LLL Reptile has both the 10.0 & the 5.0 & I think I paid about $29.00 for them and they are very easy to do business with ( highly recommend them ) I am using the 10.0 as does Olimpia based on studies of light penetration through the screen. Thanks Olimpia!!!!

CAN MY Chameleon get IVB RAYS THROUGH WINDOW ALSO?

He, he cannot. UVB does not pass through glass, plastic, or anything solid (which is why even screen cuts a percent of UVB that reaches your animal) so if he is standing by a closed window then he is not getting anything beneficial except visible light and warmth, which they still seem to like. To be useful the window must be open.

I use a reptisun 10.0 on my 48" repitarium..also have a question..does my cham receive uvb through window..??his cage is in front of window with some sunlight during day

I use T5 high output arcadias and they last for a year. Best investment ever. They are really worth the money.

Arcadia flo. bulbs last AT LEAST a year* ---100% GUARANTEED...

vs. 6 months.

Independent tests show that the Arcadia T5 lose about 30% of their out-put
in a year.
But I must add that this can vary due to what type of HO ballast is used to drive them.. and it could be even LESS or MORE for some folks.

THE ARCADIA HO T5's are still putting out MORE UV at the end of a year THAN PRACTICALLY ALL BRANDs of ALL BRAND NEW T8 BULBS of similar UV (%) ratings.

But don't take my word for it. :p
I totally understand since I sell them that folks are *e-hem* "resistant" to take my word for it. :(

That is why I suggest to get educated on the real "skinny" about UV...

and who's bulb does what...

please join the UV Meters Group on Yahoo.

http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/UVB_Meter_Owners/

and no.. you don't need to own a UV meter to join the group. ;)

This is where folks participate and give their bulb readings and exchange ideas.
All the UV "players" around the world are members.
Members include folks that own the companies that make UV bulbs and testing equipment, etc. etc.

AND
There is a database of readings submitted by independent people (who are not promoting anything :D)

As a member, you will have access TO ALL THE DATA that independent testers have submitted.

So if anyone wants to...
they can see for themselves what is the real skinny on the different UV bulbs.
As tested and submitted by ordinary people documenting their findings.

It is moderated by Dr. Frances Baines.
So you know THIS IS the real deal!

Cheers and Happy Holidays!
