Will they still use dirt/soil or will they only use play sand?

Dirt is fine as long as it is organic and doesn't have perilite. I used cocofiber successfully. Just make sure it can hold a tunnel.

ok I might just go to Lowe’s or something and get some play sand. Thanks for your help!

Incase no one has said this or I just missed it, make sure the substrate is wet enough to hold a size-able tunnel that you make with your fingers. Some people miss out on this info and the tunnel collapses on their Cham.
