Current Problem - I am worried that my chameleon might be lethargic, but I can't tell. It is about midnight here. I took him out for his daily handling at about 9 oclock, and he went to sleep on my hand after about 30 seconds. After putting him back in his cage, he was just keeping his eyes closed and grabbing the air until he caught a branch. I was worried he was dehydrated, so I went to mist him, and he just sat there with his eyes closed. the last 5 days whenever I mist, he runs for the hills. Even when he's hoofing it, he's a slow bugger. When I took him out of his cage 15 mins ago to check on him, he didn;t even bother to open his eyes. He just moved around a bit to get a good grip and went back to sleep. How can you tell the difference between a lethargic cham and a sleepy cham? If he was just drinking yesterday, could he be dehydrated already? When I misted him tonight, I saw his mouth pop open briefly a couple times, was that drinking? I don't think his eyes are sunken, there's no convex ring around his eye at all, it's all convex. I don't want my little guy to be sick. Earlier this afternoon he was walking around like a champ, but he was still moving away from me when I opened the cage, but right now he just doesn't seem to care if I touch him. Do they just ignore the world after bedtime?

here are some picks of him and his cage:

could be that your little guy is sleepy. I'm currently dealing with a sick baby cham who won't open his eyes and needs to be force fed and is getting dehydrated. I have my little guy on a 8 to 8 schedule. Lights on 8 A.M., lights out 8 P.M. Once it's bed time, I don't bother him and let him rest. I know my advice may not necessarily be the best since my baby isn't doing so great right now, but it's something to consider as I know how heartbreaking it is to see these little guys decline. Also, try to gauge how much you're handling your little guy. His new home and surroundings are more than likely causing him a little bit of stress and again, from my own current experience, it can make them take a turn for the worse. Above all else, just try to take notice that he is staying hydrated. If there is anything that I have learned, it is key to their health and well being. You posted on a great forum, everyone that has been helping me is quite good at keeping chams and have some invaluable information to share. Good luck and I hope your cham is well.

Your basking temperatures are a little warm for a baby...would lower it to the mid to low 80'sF. Was he near the basking light when he had his eyes open?

I would also not handle him much for at least a few weeks so he's not stressed out a lot.

Are his eyes shut or open when he's grasping the air?
It's possible the UVB light is bugging his eyes...easiest way to find out is to turn it off for a day or two to see if he opens his eyes.

What type of humidifier are you using and is it pointing into the cage?
You said he had his mouth open a couple of times when being misted....where you spraying the mist into his mouth?

You need to gutload/feed the insects better...but it has nothing to do with his eyes being shut yet...crickets, roaches, locusts, superworms can be fed/gutloaded with a wide assortment of greens such as collards, escarole, endive, dandelion greens, kale, etc and veggies such as carrots, sweet red pepper, squash, zucchini, sweet potato, etc.

Hope you get this sorted out quickly...they can go down hill quickly so you need to act fast.

I'm not sure if I misunderstood, but it sounded to me like you are holding him/misting him at/past bedtime which would not be a good thing. IF that's the case, then please let him be at night and don't disturb him so he can get some rest. I've heard of chams on here that cannot be woken up even with a good nudge (not sure why they were trying to wake them), so that's probably why he's seems so lethargic. Basically once they are retiring for the night, you want to let them be. That is IF I read that correct and you're getting him out at night.

Regardless, as the others said, give him some time to acclimate. I would be surprised if something is wrong that soon (5 days) unless the issue was there before you got him.
