iPhone 3G S

The starting price for an iPhone is $199. That is much less expensive than the Palm Treo 700wx I bought for 680 a few years ago. For 200 bucks you get a mini laptop that can accept calls, voicemail, text messages, has GPS (even the gen1 phones can find you on google maps) etc etc... In my opinion, for the price it beats any netbook with windows or linux out there. Even Google's Andriod phones don't copare with the ease of use and feature set.

That's 200 with the service pack. Meaning it's a reduced price for signing up for the service. Last time I checked, to buy an Iphone out right, it was over 500. no? So for those who are already on AT&T (me) and want to upgrade before their allowed time. You have to pay 100% :(

I'm sorry but I have a hard time paying 500 bucks for a stinking phone. Add all the cool aps you want, it's still a phone!

I did see what looked like a smaller version of the Iphone at Best Buy. It was 250, I think. I didn't have time to check it out completely so I'm not 100% sure what it actually was.

edit: 399 was the cheapest new phone I could find on a quick google search. It is a display model. http://unlockedfones.com/catalog/product_info.php?language=en&currency=USD&products_id=33 I found a used one in "good condition" for 339. The last laptop I bought was an HP with 4 gigs of ram, 160 gig hard drive, 399 new.

Im a bigtime pc user, and I mostly run ubuntu on my machines which is an incredible program, but it will be some time until all the programs from windows will be fully functional on it, but imo, it puts the mac os windows to shame and has alot of potential. But this whole 3g s thing coming out has put the 3g down to $100 which I plan on buying this week. I have a palm treo 650 which ive had forever, and back in the day, it was the shit, but now its time for an upgrade. The 3g s sounds enticing, but I don't spend much time on the phone aside from answering calls, and I know I wont be on the internet much on it. I would never take and edit videos on it, and I have a compass in my I never hardly get on with my treo. My treo drops calls multiple times a day, and It freezes alot, so at this point I just need a better phone, and a $100 I phone sounds like a good solution to me.

I am a Mac user, and am frustrated that you can't get the iPhone with all carriers.

You can actually run the iPhone with different carriers. You just have to modify the software slightly. Its pretty simple to do. Jailbreaking your phone is easy! Using different carriers, 3rd party apps (WAAAAAAYYYY before the APP store)

here is a link http://blog.iphone-dev.org/

Oh also BTW to all you Windoze users. You can load your favorite OS on a Mac and it will probably run it smoother than on your PC :p You Can do this by either using Boot Camp or Parallels.

See Ya,

Todd

I've gone back and forth, Mac (1995-2000) to PC (1997 [at work] - 2009) to Mac; when my old laptop was getting too slow to do much of anything, I really didn't want to go Vista, and reverted to Mac - MacBook Pro, like yours, Tyler. I'm still getting used to it, but liking it. If you're willing to invest another $30 (to unlock the potential of a $2000+ machine), I recommend "Mac OS X Leopard - The Missing Manual" (author David Pogue).
I'm running the Mac version of Office - which I prefer to PC's Office 2007; I know there are ways of setting aside part of your Mac to use as a PC and run your PC software on as well.
I have the first generation iPhone, and am looking forward to anybody's reviews of the latest one.

Yeah, I really need to go get the Windows Office stuff for the Mac, which would fill many of the gaps I think it has for me... If I could get back into my Excel projects and figure out an easy way to write stuff up, I'd probably be able to force myself to keep using it until I grasped it.

Next problem - resizing photos to specific pixel sizes, adding small text to the photos, etc... Just moving files and pictures around from folder to folder and organizing everything has me confused. I'm gonna make Mike Monge give me a 1 hour tutorial when he's in Vegas next week, he swears by Macs.

Maybe I'll look for that book in the meantime. There's not much I hate doing more than reading (besides taxes and accounting).

Vista is outright horrible! I've been in IT for over ten years, Microsoft certified and all, and Vista truly is the Windows ME of this decade. But...on a more positive note, I've been testing the new Windows 7 due out in October of this year. I have to admit, they're getting it right this time. It's much more efficient and refined than Vista. It's a shame the beta release expires July 1st, I'm currently using it on my laptop and don't want to give it up. I think that Windows 7 will definitely give OSX a run for it's money.

With that said, I think both have their places and without either we wouldn't be where we are today. Microsoft needs the hipsters to remind them that not everything is all business and Apple needs M$ to make bad products so they can refine them and make them better. It's a give take thing... ;)

I was always taught that if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. With that said, congratulations on getting a new cell phone, I am sure you will enjoy it. :)

People like me who have to support 100+ Iphones in a work environment do not think highly of them. The Iphone far from the second coming of Jebus that the masses proclaim it :D

This is getting a little off topic, but what is so bad about vista? I've been using it on 2 laptops and honestly both OS seem to be working as good as the last version of windows. No problems that I can see. It is a bit of a memory hog, but other than that it runs fine.

I'm not trying to argue. I'm just curious as to what is so terrible about the vista OS? I know when it first came out it was garbage. But I think they've pretty much ironed out the bugs. My first version of it worked fine but it also did about 100 auto updates as soon as I had internet connection. I can only assume those were the fixes being installed. I never got to experience the pre fix Vista. The second version I got on another new laptop only did a couple of updates. I can't tell the difference between the 2.

Nico, Where are you finding Iphones for 100 bucks? That I would jump on, even if it was an older version. Hell I would probably pay up to 300, but 500 is getting a bit ridiculous. Especially when you add up the added cost of aps. The whole aps thing is a scam to begin with. I think it's genus that MAC is making money off of people wanting their phone to function like a PC....even though that is the idea behind buying this phone to begin with. You just have to pay extra for it to work....geez! they get you coming and going!

Large communication companies have been doing this for yrs. "We will sell you an Avia S8700 (big a** phone system) for 2.5 mil. Oh we forgot to mention it's another 250Gs for that software upgrade. Oh you want it to do that? ok that will be another 500 Gs for that software." I used to install these. :D every time there was a software upgrade the customer had to pay to send their tech to school to get his new software cert. And that school cost puts Harvard to shame.

Memory hog was a big issue for me with some of my programs - and I didn't much care for Office 2007 (I like Office 2008 (for Macs) better - it's closer to 2003 - which is exactly what some people don't like about it). Where I work, the IT people have actually ben stripping Vista from incoming machines and installing XP (only on request, but nearly everyone's been requesting it). But if I were just starting and hadn't had 7 years of XP, I probably wouldn't have any quarrels with Vista. My approach to change is to avoid it if possible, and when it's no longer possible, to make giant changes (PC to Mac) instead of the more minor ones (XP to Vista).

THIS IS NOT A COMPLAIN ABOUT WINDOWS THREAD... CAN WE PLEASE KEEP THE TOPIC RELATED TO THE 3G S and iPhone 3.0. :) At least stay close to the topic

You can get past that message by disconnecting from the internet while the download is extracting before it tries to hit the server.

It works I just did it.

Copy and paste feature is awesome. Really all I have been missing , well I guess a few other things. So far I like the update. I cannot wait to get my new phone.

Nic,

I am willing to bet you spend a lot more time using the phone when you get the 3G. It is great. I didn't do much on my old phone either. I am being dragged in. :D

I love my iphone. I have a 3g 16gig. I havent even come close to using the max storage on it. For you non AT&T users you can always buy a used one thats unlocked by AT&T. I had a 2nd iphone (long story) and sold it to a T mobile user and it worked perfectly.

Let us know how it works with the Forums (picture loading speed, etc.)!
I find a leetle trouble sometimes with the (original) iPhone and the Forums, just being able to tap on the thread instead of inadvertently going to the poster's profile - but that's my clumsiness, and not the phone's fault.
