Hi Everyone,

Just a quick post introducing myself to the forum.

I've been thinking about getting a chameleon for the last few months and am still in the process of doing the research to make sure this is a good fit for me. I'm currently looking at options for what would be a good first chameleon and I'm strongly leaning towards a veiled. I've been lurking around the forums for a while and decided to go ahead and join. I'm also looking at caging options and trying to figure out if it would be better to go with a pre-fab cage or a self-built customized cage.

I'm 34 year old sign language interpreter in the Little Rock, Arkansas area. My partner and I have two miniature dachshunds, two cats, a Yellow Nape Amazon parrot, a nano reef tank, a freshwater planted species tank focusing on red tailed red eye pufferfish (Carinotetraodon irrubesco), a koi pond, three chickens, a fairly extensive collection of plants (mainly focusing on carnivorous plants with a few succulents and orchids thrown in for good measure). We also have honeybee hives (more his thing than mine).

I've gotten some really good information from the forums so far and looking forward to more!

Hi and welcome to the forum!

The good thing about custom builds is that you can customize them to meet your particular needs. So things like size, drainage, materials, and look are all up to you. So they certainly have their benefits if you are of the handy sort. But a commercial aluminum cage is light and easy to move, so they make great cages to move outdoors for some sunlight, for example.

If you have any specific questions about anything feel free to ask!

Welcome! You will find endless info on this forum. It looks like you have a lot of pets already!!! That's a lot of responsibility but I'm sure it's all worth. As for me, I'm pretty handy but I'd rather buy everything I need. It's fun doing DIY projects but I just don't have the time. So for me, buy premade. :):):)

Hi and welcome. I think you should get a veiled, for they are the hardiest chameleons and the best for beginners. I have one who is the best. His name is Bubba. As for the cage dilemma, it is really a matter of what you have more of: money or time. If you can purchase the best cage there is, go for it. If not, homemade ar just as good as store bought.:)

Welcome to the forum! :)

Where you live might help you decide what cage to go with.... if your home or outdoor environment are similar to what the chameleon needs, a pre-fab screen cage may be a good buy. If your environment is too cold, too hot, too dry or whatever, then a more solid walled enclosure may be the way to go - and those are harder to find pre-fab for a decent price.
