So, as most of us are aware, the 100 watt light bulb will be no longer sold or produced, enported, ect. in america as of january first. They are also suppose to decommison 90s, 75s, 60s, and 40s until you can no longer buy these types.
What are you planning on useing as an alternative? I have heard of ceramic heat emmiters but I am not familar with their longevity or effectiveness. I've also heard the lights that contain mercury ( energy savers) can cause blindness in chameleons?

Just curious on your thoughts on this subject.

thanks

Hi Chamguy,
You can always get a halogen or spot bulb. That ordanance or whatever you call it is just referring to the 'ol screw in edison style bulbs.
I think there are plenty of large "loop-holes" in the way that was written. So "specialty" bulbs can be made/imported, like the neodynum bulbs and blue color corrected bulbs like Zoo Med and Exo Terra imports.
Eh.. they are a little more, but do give somewhat improved color light.

Also, Metal Halide will be becoming available for serious hobbyists.
Yes.. expensive .. but nice with UV and heat and HIGH CRI (cri=light quality=excellent color rendering index) .
So, no worries my friend.
Cheers.

Where did you hear this?

I haven't heard this and use cfls for my chameleons the past few years to get more light into their cages (I use the ge daylight 6500k 26w) and haven't had any problems at all, so am wondering if there is something I should know or if this is just a twist on the old problem that used to be there from the UVB cfls which no longer exists now speculated to the non-uvb cfls.

If there is proof of a legitimate problem I would like to know.

I really hate the mercury content of these bulbs. Can't believe in the name of pollution management we are now spreading zillions of mercury contaminated bulbs all over the place...

Just checked your link Todd-
those new led bulbs look promising as a replacement for what I am doing with the ge daylight cfls. pretty cool...

For now, I'll probably go buy a few multi-packs of incandescent bulbs for now and figure out what to do later lol. I do have a brand of UV/UVA light that's excellent from a company that I'm waiting on buying but they've had it out of stock for a while now. So I'll have alternatives, although they'll be a lot more money.
