Ill advised reptile shops

Recently Ive been to two well known and respected reptile shops with my best friend so he could pick up the rest of his setup and a baby Veiled. BOTH places told us he needs calcium with d3... EVERYDAY! I couldnt really udnerstand that one and when i brought up the possibilty of vitamin D3 overdose or over supplementing problems they both looked at me like i was crazy and told me i was wrong and that cant happen.

It just makes me nervous of how many people they hae told that too

Usually it's best (easiest) to just smile and nod an know they don't know jack. I have 2 reptile "specialty" shops here in town, and I wouldn't trust either for information on chams. What you have to realize is, most people do not utilize the internet. As surprising as this may sound, it's very true. So unless this shop keeper is currently doing studies on current husbandry information for chams, they are probably basing their knowledge on word of mouth and a book he/she read 10 years ago.

We really are lucky to have a tool as powerful as this forum, where the most current and up to date information can be shared in a format as close to real time as we are going to get.

agreed. Local petshop has a cfl reptisun 5.0 as the only light source for 3 baby panthers. Says there is no way that they blind cham's.

i know that, and i told my friend that the guy at the store was full of crap and he is getting on the forums eventually. he has cruised the forum under my profile to get some reading in and has a real good setup. Here are some pictures

Here is his setup. We got the cage off fearaffect (thanks for the hookup!) the tree from armstrong gardens and the grapewood from some shop. The other brown log thing came with the cage and there is a hanging silk leafy vine in there now to.

Heres the little cham he got today. I told him to wait and find a local breeder and get one, but he got way excited cuz this guy climbed all over him and flared up without getting too pissy and just screamed "take me home" so he did. He is eating and drinking without problem though so he is excited. He named him Marlboro, because their cigarette boxes come in a bunch of different colors just like chameleons aparently lol

I was also told(by a site sponsor) you CAN dust with D3 everyday with no problems. Doe anyone know if a cham really can OD on D3?

Yes you can give a cham too much D3 this was brought up in another thread that you took part in and some really good websites were added in there. Your cham can die a slow death if you give them D3 everyday.

In the thread I was in the site sponsor said it was ok...But just to be safe I bought some cal. without d3 online and had it shipped here.

A local exotic pet store keeps their chams with only basking light and daily d3 dusting. Pretty sad state of affairs since i'm sure they recommend the same routine to new keepers.
