Ikea Panther Build

Since I'm not carpentry inclined, I'm thinking about starting a build from this bookshelf from IKEA http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80208464/?query=802.084.64#/80208464

Measurements:Width: 31 1/2 " Depth: 15 3/8 " Height: 79 1/2 "

the height gives me room for a drainage bucket at the bottom, and lighting at the top with no problem. The depth isn't phenomenal but I think it's deep enough for a Panther considering the generous height and width.

I'm mostly concerned about waterproofing the sides of the book case, does anyone know if I'll have to sand it down and waterproof? Or should I just fake rock wall the ENTIRE enclosure like I'm planning on doing to the back?

most of ikeas items are made from composite board which is going to water log quickly.

That's what I was afraid of, I guess it's back to craigslist to find a solid wood cabinet or bookshelf to modify. Thanks!
