Identification Help

I just encountered a snake as I was scrambling up Mt. Wilson (Las Vegas) and can't seem to ID it as the only snake that seems similar was a rattlesnake but it wasn't rattling and I stood about a foot away for a minute without realizing. Any help would be greatly appreciated! (btw is this in the right section of the forums?)

any specific kind? and yea needless to say it scared us pretty bad but I was under the impression they always rattled if you were close? And we were talking and breathing loud wouldn't that have scared it? (sorry I am curious in case I run into more)
