Rose. BUT, I purchased some special soil from a friend in California, maybe the egg was laid in that soil rather than somewhere here in NJ where I bought the Rose bush. Or... Maybe wherever the Rose bush was from, that's where it came from!?
I'll get a better, closer pic.
It's got a few shades of a poop like color lol, and has a light tan pattern on it. Very smooth, like a hornworm. NO fuzz at all.

Well it could either be:
Hyles gallii; common name - Bedstaw hawkmoth
or
Sphecodina abbottii; common name - Abbotts sphinx moth
You might want to try fiddling around the linked website, since I only went by the picture you posted and the very brief color description.

To me that looks like a gold moth in its caterpillar larval stage... Ive seen many many many maanyyy growing up here in California. So I googled it and it does indeed look similar but I also saw a caterpillar that looks like that which is the larva of a Painted Beauty butterfly. The photo is so small, I can't really tell. But check out those species! : _D

Found out what it is.
Yellow Striped Armyworm (Spodoptera ornithogalli)
It has disappeared so hopefully I'll get to see a moth that will be one of my mantids breakfast. lol

I'd rather let it eat more rose leaves and pupate and emerge as an adult. My mantids would love a good sized flying feeder.
FYI, it has been MIA. Hopefully it'll come out as a nice moth soon!!
