Just a suggestion... feel free to ignore.

Another method to accomplish the same goals would be to remove those remnants, and create a screen frame out of the wooden door frames.

The splines running full length of the frame pieces—along with the screen—should strengthen the frame as well.

Which you will need for your plants and am trying to figure out how hight to hang it above the cage. Oh leaving the bottom for storage is a great idea. make sure you seal the all wood really good or you will have rot issues in no time. Also find a sealant with a mildew retardant in it too.

FWIW, I built mine into a 1 x 2 frame. They are less than an inch above the top screen, which is far enough that I can keep my hand on the screen indefinitely. These lights do produce some heat, but most goes straight up.
