got my new chameleon home today

setup the cage got everything working then ten minutes later the heat lamp blew

have put in a 60 watt bulb and temp now back upto 85 degrees

will this be ok till the shops open in the morning to go get two.... yes a spare is in order me thinks.....

karma (the other hafs idea not mine...) has been eating worms and drinking mist so he seems ok,

just remind me optimum temp for a 4 month male veiled...

How old is your cham and what kind is it? You can use a regular house bulb I am using a 40 watt bulb for my heat lamp. Just keep it between 80-85....

he is 4 months old ...... have a dimmer heat thermostat set at 82 with a red 60w lamp (all i have in the shed)

thrmostat is a living earth habistat dimming thermostat will be at the rep shop first thing.....

dont go buy some fancy schmancy heat bulb... just use a common household light bulb. not the newer coil type the incandecent type. they work fine.

what wattage should i use and why do they sell the posh repsun things if they are not needed, would a 60w red lamp do then???

a red lamp works for heat but they emitt high infared spectrum. i use red lights on my geckos which are nocturnal. i have a 60 watt on my 2x2x4 cage. if yours is smaller and you have a 4mo old veiled. i would probably go with a 40 watt. just monitor your temps. i keep my basking spot at around 85 degrees or so. the other basking lights should not be necessary if you use a reptisun 5.0 linear tube light. the reptisun puts out uvb/uva. so if you use just a regular light for heat you should be fine.

You need a UVB bulb-a linear flourescent 18"-24" Zoomed Reptisun 5.0 being the most recommended AND a heat lamp. Most people, myself included use regular household lightbulbs. You do not want red-you want white light as chameleons associate basking heat with white light. Seein that you are in the UK-if your temps are dropping below 60 at night you would want to use a ceramic heater, or a red bulb as a second choice.

last question what is the best humidity range the guy in the shop set it all up on a max min thermo hygro meter
min set at 30 max set at 90
its at 45 at the moment (9.30pm with just heat lamp on low glow 82 degrees)

as long as you mist 2-3 times minimum daily your humidity should be okay. mine get mist 3-5 times day and the humidity ranges from 48-78 or so... what are you using for uv? and dont worry bout bugging. asking questions is a good thing. at least you are worried about your animals needs.

off out to get some branches in the morning told i could pick from the woods as log as i pour boiling water on them to kill parasites and bugs

peel off the bark too. make sure its dry some sap is poisionous

will post a picture of the vivarium later when i have the branches in, he has basking spots on the foilage but want to give him more to occupy him

You should take the lights out of the cage and put them on top, he could burn himself. You might also want to consider using a normal bulb because they associate the color of the light with the heat. After all, out in the wild the sun isn't red

will get a ceramic guard as the top is solid ,
also will try a plain lamp insted of the red but as you can see from the pic he seems happy on the branch lol

the branch is indeed a dead dry one well was until i washed it in bleach earlier. (followed by a good hosing down)

If you cut out sections in the top that the lights can fit into and put metal screen over it, it'd be safer. You have to keep the basking bulb about 4-7 inches from the screen so they don't burn themselves if they get too close to the screen or bulb.

just changed the bulb for a white 60w bulb on the dimmer thermostat

got a most unimpressed look when i opened the door to take the red one out
