I have mine on a humidistat like this one. I keep the ambient humidity 60% in the cham room. I also attach my jackson's fogger to the humidistat, so it adds extra humidity to his cage when the room humidifier is going off.
It costs $55, but a timer will probably run $20, and will be less effective.

No problem. The humidistat plug is made by Dayton. You plug it into a wall (I have mine plugged in by extension cord so I can locate it between my cages), set the minimum RH on the dial, and what ever you plug into the front will only turn on when the humidity falls below that minimum. I got a plug duplicator so I could also plug my Jackson's fogger. This way I can keep my jackson's cage at a higher RH than the overall room, in which I also keep panthers.

My humidifier run time all depends on how dry the air is in my house. On nights where it dips into the 30s (F) I run it all night because my house heater runs all night. Most of the time though I do not have to run it during the day. My AquaZamp mister keeps the humidity up and it falls in between mistings which I believe to be a good thing.
