Hello am preparing for my Veiled Chameleon and was told I needed to give it a variety of food. I was looking into Hornworms and Silkworms as well as crickets and locust (I can't do roaches because of allergies). My only concern is that Silkworms and Hornworms are incredibly expensive. I'm willing to do it if they will feed my Chameleon for a while so I was wondering if anyone will tell me how many hornworms/silkworms a juvenile and full grown veiled will eat.

It all depends on the size of the worm.

Silkworms are my favorite food--they don't take up much space, don't smell, and are easy to care for. They also have a really good calcium/phosphorus balance.

I buy silkworm eggs from Coastal Silkworms and hatch my own. The eggs are not as delicate as the worm when being transported.

None of my chameleons liked hornworms. Hornworms grow really fast, too, and become too big very quickly.

The one thing I noticed when feeding a lot of silkworms is that their urates take on a grey/pink tinge. I had the vet look at it under a microscope to make sure it wasn't blood.

Welcome to the foruns. Hornworms grow fast. If you can keep them cool it slows their growth. I have found the frig to be to cold and it kills them but a wine cooler set around 65 works great. I do take them out at night every day or two and that keeps them from dying. Silkworms are excellent feeders and stay small longer for a young Cham. I feed young chameleons everyday, 10 to 15 feeders depending what feeders I'm using. I feed young adults every other day, 6 to 8 feeders, depending on the type of feeder. Older adults 15 to 16 months and older I only feed 3 times a week 4 to 6 feeders depending on the type of feeder of course. Here's an example of what I feed my 14 month old veiled on food day.
3 crickets, 1 super worm, 2 silkworm and a butter worm
Another day maybe 2 crickets, 2 med hornworms or one large

I hope this helps. You might find my blog for new keepers helpful. https://www.chameleonforums.com/blo...-keepers-young-veiled-panther-chameleons.html
