I dont know if what I do is common, but it has worked for me.
Initially I keep the room itself at a good warm (not hot) temp during the day, rather than providing a basking spot. The UVB tube will provide a tiny amount of heat as well. And I use aquariums with screen tops initially. Then when they get a couple/few months old and I start moving them to bigger houses (sorting the bigger ones from the smaller ones) I add applicance bulbs (10-25watt) as mini-basking lights (still with a fairly warm room) . I dont use a significant heat bulb until they are over three months (depends as much as or more on the size of the chameleon as on age).

I as well keep babies in a room that is heating in winter (cold canadian winters), otherwise the heat from other cages provides adequate ambientent temps for babies during other months. I cage my babies like this post https://www.chameleonforums.com/plastic-totes-caging-22773/. The rack babies are on is 4ft long, and a ReptiSun 4ft fixture/bulb mounted to shelf above provides lighting. As the babies grow, they are then moved according to size as well to different tubs.
During the summer months especially, my babies get the proper heat from the room temp that I do not have to add basking bulbs. But once at about 4-6 months (again depending on each cham) they will get a basking bulb with wattage of 25w to provide extra basking.

EDIT: My babies are not set up on my automatic misting system as would be too much water at one time for them. They get a very fine hand mist, again depending on the time of year, 3-6 times a day. I use both fake plants and a pothos in the tubs. I find the pothos helps hold water longer for drinking and keeps the humidity up longer.
