Hey all,

Sorry if im suddenly asking a ton of questions, but is there any way to tell if my female has eggs even if they are unfertilized? She has a laying box, but she's my first chameleon and im.. overcautious?
Iv looked at multiple sites, as well as through books and i cant find much.. maybe im just not looking in the right places?

The best way to know is to know your chameleon. Watch and pay attention to her, both physical characteristics and behavior. As she develops the eggs she will start to look plump and will begin to gain weight. As she gets closer to laying you will even be able to see the shape of the eggs in her abdomen, especially when she is curled up, like when they sleep.

As far as behavior, when she is ready to lay, she will become restless, climbing around the cage, especially at the bottom of the cage. You may catch her scratching at the bottom of the cage, or even digging in your plants.

If she becomes egg bound she will start showing signs of being sick, won't eat, may even stop drinking, or sleeping during the day. If this happens you will want to get her to a vet ASAP.

Glad to hear she has a laying container in her cage. If she does start digging make sure she doesn't see you watching her while she is digging. It can make her abandon the hole a day if it happens too often she could become eggbound.

When a veiled female is sexually mature she gets brownish yellow splotches on her body and when receptive she gets bright blue dots. When she is not receptive or is gravid she will turn the background color almost black When she sees a male (or sometimes even a female or you) and can even maintain this color throughout her eggs producing cycle. Often a few days before laying eggs she will slow down or stop eating. She will likely roam the cage looking for a Site to lay the eggs. She will likely be more thirsty.

Might as well tell you about egglaying now too...
When she's ready to lay eggs she should start to dig a hole. She may dig more than one and it can take several days but she should settle on one and dig it until she is happy with it. She should then turn around butt down and, at the eggs...usually in the evening...then fill in the hole and tamp it down and return to the branches hungry and thirsty. If it doesn't go like this or she becomes lethargic, sits low in the cage or sleeps during the day you need to tke action as she may be heading towards eggbinding.

Thank you guys!!

Okay, she just has soil in there until i can get sand and mix it in, like i read if that is alright?

She does look a bit plumper, but im still learning chameleons as a whole, i updated the album.

>> this one is the night i got her, as i was putting their cage togeather https://imageshack.com/i/exL9pXNNj

>> Her around the same time shedding and pissy ... https://imageshack.com/i/pci3N2daj

>> this is the one i took last night? https://imageshack.com/i/exwG24nYp is it all just normal weight, or possibly eggs? her brother just had his (Im assuming) first sperm plug, since i just saw it. so she would be around the same time right?

I really, really appreciate all the info!!!

It looks like she may indeed be producing eggs. It is hard to say at this point. If she is gravid, I would guess that she still has a couple of weeks before she lays. The best thing you can do is get the lay bin ready and leave it in her cage until she lays them and then put it back in after you remove the eggs. I would also give her as much privacy as possible until she has laid. Just make sure she has the food and water she needs and wait for the eggs to be laid.

For years I've used the same sand...its produced by kings...

It holds a tunnel well and if they eat some of it it does not cause an impaction.
People have success with many combinations of soils, sands etc.

They all mature at different ages. She does look plump and could have eggs but she doesn't seem to have the splotches....so I don't know for sure.

Thanks for the link for the sand! I will grab some!

what do you mean by splotches? And is it all the time or just when she gets huffy? I worked with them a lot of me handling them for examining if i need too. (just a minuet or so, so no stress.)

My sick girl

Hi everyone I have a veil chameleon I believe she is around the age of year and half, I've noticed in the past 2 weeks about her being at the bottom of the cage didn't really think anything of it, I figured she was getting close to being mature and ready to lay eggs. So I've been looking for a new screen cage so I can put her in a 24×24×48. So I orde r ed the cage 2 day's ago here's the problem. Yesterday I noticed her sitting on her vines all weird like her front feet were right and her back legs were off to the side, that was around noon so later that day her but was completely hanging off vine and her tail was limp no curl. So. I took her out and saw that her hind legs were almost like stiff and her tail was completely limp. So I made her a nice bed to lay in and figured I'd take her to a vet specialist in the morning well when we woke up at 4 am she was hanging by 1 foot which I thght she was dead but when I picked her up she was still moving, it's like she has no energy. I think I have to say I didn't realize you shouldn't have any kind of lizard mulch at the bottom of cage which she has.well did I pulled it out yesterday. She still has beautiful colors which seams weird to me cause if she's sick I would think she be a dark color.
It's almost like her butt end is dead please help
Thank you
