Holy crap!!!

Zuri (my female who gave birth 3 weeks ago) was in some pretty major distress tonight in trying to push out what I thought was a poop. After about 5 minutes of intense pushing (eyes screwed shut, mouth open and tongue poking out, with both back legs stretched out to the sides) I was shocked to see a baby Cham head poking out!! A few more pushes and it dropped to the floor of the enclosure.

Obviously, it was stillborn. The yolk sack had been completely absorbed, but it was a fully formed baby, larger than my smallest one. My question is, have any of you heard of this, or had this happen? Is this a common thing with live bearers?? I could understand maybe a day or two, but 3 full weeks after??

I have zero experience with live-bearers so I can't offer anything, only that I'm glad she got it out! Sounds like it was intense for her.

I would shoot Carl C. a PM and see if he has had any experiences like this. He is also currently working with Trioceros Sternfeldi and he had a ton of past experience with breeding similar species.

yeah I was hoping Carl would chime in on this thread, but I guess he hasn't seen it yet? He's a busy guy!:p He's helped me a lot with rearing these babies, so I'm hoping to hear from him soon!

Me too! She hadn't been recovering well after the birth of these babies and I couldn't understand why? Asha recovered in about a week after her clutch and Zuri just wasn't seeming to bounce back. She also got really antisocial and pretty sedentary and it got to the point that I booked her in for another vet visit scheduled for tomorrow morning. After dropping that stillborn last night she has considerably improved! Her eyes seem brighter, shes actively hunting, and has decided that I'm a pretty cool person again. Shes back to begging to come out and crawling up the front of her enclosure everytime she sees me. Her color has gotten much brighter again too! I'm so happy to have my friendly, happy girl back again! :D

And yes, that labor was extremely intense. I admit, I was panicking! I've never seen anything like that before, not even during her regular birth. It was awful!

This thread was mentioned to me.

I had a Rudis years back that did the same thing. It was around two weeks after the litter was born that she dropped a stillborn. During that time the animal was not eating well, drinking a lot, and in general didn't look to hot. Afterwards the animal was fine. Lived long enough to drop another litter if I remember.

Sorry I can't offer any help with this one Christine. I'm glad momma had the strength to get the baby out. Keep her really hydrated and give some trips outside to soak up some rays.

Carl
