Hissing with mouth closed

My mom has been saying she hears my cham hiss but with his mouth closed. And she says it doesn’t sound like just a huff and that it sounds like a hiss.
Could this be him expelling heat or is he just getting upset at my mom? She doesn’t really come near him she just will be in the general area.

Does he puff up or anything when she comes near him? My girl sometimes hisses at me with her mouth closed or almost closed when I open her enclosure or get to close to her.
