Hi, I just thought I would introduce myself here as a new member. My name's Ben and I currently have 5 veiled chams.
I'm currently in the process of trying to breed them but my girls seem a bit unresponsive. I've had 2 clutches of duff eggs from one of my girls and was hoping for the next clutch to be fertile, the thing is when I put her with a boy its not that she shows unreceptive colour but the boy just doesn't seem to get her in the right position and after an hour of clambering about he gets bored and wanders off leaving her sat there looking pretty bewildered. Her most recent clutch of duff eggs were developed and laid without seeing a male as I missed the signs of her being truly receptive. She laid them about 3 weeks ago. She eats shed's drinks fine and has no signs of being in ill health at all. I'm wondering if its just me being impatient and maybe give her another week off before trying again.

any help greatly appreciated oh and hello :)

have you gotten any fertile clutches out of the male? first time i tried breeding was with the first chameleon i had ever gotten and i had made a number of mistakes with him. such as 24 hr light cycles, using a 150 watt bulb, and when i moved him outdoors for the summer i hadnt phased out the d3 that i had been using daily and in copious amounts leading to an obvious overdose. good thing i realized what i had done and removed him within a day or 2.

thank god for veileds, they bounce back from some terrible husbandry.

anyways what im getting at is my male was infertile. probably because of the extremely hot basking spot i provided. it took me a while to figure out. i thought i was doing something wrong with incubation. it wasnt until another male i had gotten later came of age. i mated him with the same female i had been trying to with my first male. that i finally got a good clutch.

so with all that said how long have you had these chams what are their ages? is it one male and 4 females? and so if i understand correctly you mated them once before, got an infertile clutch and then missed your second attempt and got a second infertile clutch?

what are the signs they are infertile that you are getting? going moldy? desiccating?

are they all in good health and of appropriate age?

as far as your current problem goes youre male may either not be in good condition to breed the female may still be recuperating from the last clutch she laid. of maybe hes just not a ladies man. ive had a couple male breeders who had swag in their step when they were young turn into fumbling fools or a tad to aggressive for breeding when they got old.

best you can do for now is try visually exposing them visually every few day and hope they begin to act receptive.

try not to make your presence too obvious especially to the female. an impending mating with a potential "predator" nearby may make her feel vulnerable and in effect show unreceptive colors.

cant tell you with 100% confidence what your particular issue is. these are just a couple ideas based on my experience

Hi thanks for the response, no I haven't had a fertile clutch from the boy I'm trying to mate.
It's currently 3 girls 2 boys, I have 2 girls who are just over a year old, 1 girl who is about 3 as far as I can tell (she isn't for breeding), and two boys, one who is extremely aggressive towards males and females and again not for breeding and one who is the chameleon I'm trying to pair up.

As far as past clutches go the first took me by complete surprise she laid without ever seeing a boy, the second I missed as I didn't quiet read her signals and didn't pair her in time so she was carrying un fertile eggs again before I realised and it was too late to pair.

I know they are infertile as they are yellowish and go mouldy very quickly.

they live under good daylight T8 tubes and I'm using solar raptor 160W uvb bulbs for around 8 hours a day. they get hoppers and crickets everyday and have regular dusting with calcium. I have a misting system rigged up that sprays them for around 15 minutes a day everyday and the water drains into a reservoir.
As far as I'm aware they are in good health albeit the girl who has been laying (the girl I'm trying to mate) is a little on the small side but has had the best reaction from the male I'm using. I think she is still recovering from the last laying so I will give her a bit more time.
today when I put them together the male jumps on very quickly with a few nudges to move her into position and she stays the same colour making no attempt to escape, he was seconds away from the actual mating but couldn't quiet get it right. I'll give her plenty or R&R over the rest of the week with plenty of food and water and give it another go on my day off.

Any more input?
