Help!!!

we have a 4 or 5 month old veiled chameleon...jsut today she has been acting weird we found her in the egg laying bucket but she did not lay any eggs...she has been acting lethargic but she has GREAT GRIP she is gapping her mouth and we can see some subtrate in her mouth her color is normal but she is just acting odd hanging rom one foot upside down rom a branch and when we hold her she just lays on her side but grips onto our fingers so hard it about cuts into our skin....we need help this is our first chameleon and we dont know i she is egg bound or what...she has been pooping normally

Hi, Sorry to hear your having problems with your little girl. Your best bet is to fill out the how to ask for help form. It will give members a chance to check out your husbandry and point out things that need be be changed for the health of your cham. It only takes a couple of mins but it's really worth it :)

Chameleon Info:

* Your Chameleon - The species, sex, and age of your chameleon. How long has it been in your care?
* Handling - How often do you handle your chameleon?
* Feeding - What are you feeding your cham? What amount? What is the schedule? How are you gut-loading your feeders?
* Supplements - What brand and type of calcium and vitamin products are you dusting your feeders with and what is the schedule?
* Watering - What kind of watering technique do you use? How often and how long to you mist? Do you see your chameleon drinking?
* Fecal Description - Briefly note colors and consistency from recent droppings. Has this chameleon ever been tested for parasites?
* History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you.


Cage Info:

* Cage Type - Describe your cage (Glass, Screen, Combo?) What are the dimensions?
* Lighting - What brand, model, and types of lighting are you using? What is your daily lighting schedule?
* Temperature - What temp range have you created (cage floor to basking spot)? Lowest overnight temp? How do you measure these temps?
* Humidity - What are your humidity levels? How are you creating and maintaining these levels? What do you use to measure humidity?
* Plants - Are you using live plants? If so, what kind?
* Placement - Where is your cage located? Is it near any fans, air vents, or high traffic areas? At what height is the top of the cage relative to your room floor?
* Location - Where are you geographically located?


Current Problem - The current problem you are concerned about.
 
A couple of questions, how sure are you on the age, and how long have you had the chameleon? If she is only 4 or 5 months I would doubt it is eggs, possible but very unlikely. Could you post pictures of your cham? It would also help if you could fill out the "how to ask for help" form below?

Until we have more info I would check that she is not to hot, mist her lots with water just above room temp, and leave her alone in case she does want/need to lay eggs. jmo

Handling - only when cleaning out enclosure
Feeding - Crickets. 2 a day. Morning and night. with cricket orange cubes
Supplements - Fluckers Vitamin D phosphorus free.every other day every 2 days
Watering - Misting rom water bottle. till leaves are soaked and puddles form. yes even now that she is acting wierd she opened her mouth while misting
Fecal Description - brown pretty big here is white and yellow. no

Lighting - Basking and Red lamp. 12 hours basking 12 hours night time
Temperature - 85 at basking area and about 70 on the floor. 64 at floor 90 at basking at night. i themometers
Humidity - 80% How are you creating and maintaining these levels? misting and lighting and substrate and plants. What do you use to measure humidity? the humidity gauge thing
Plants - Are you using live plants? yes 2 If so, what kind? golden pothos and mass cane
Placement - Where is your cage located? in our sun room. Is it near any fans, air vents, or high traffic areas? NO At what height is the top of the cage relative to your room floor? 6 feet
Location - Where are you geographically located? North Carolina USA

Current Problem - she is acting lethargic but has great color and grip and is gapping her mouth

my girlfriends in on the way to vet with her right now. as i was trying to get her out of her cage she bit me really hard and wouldnt let go thats the first time she has ever been hostil:confused:
 
That's wonderful that you're getting her to the vet right away also..sorry about your finger did it hurt too much??? Keep us updated on her progress.
 
im not understanding how your basking temps at night raise and your floor temps lower. do you change the temp in the sun room at night? change bulbs? also at night if your floor is getting around 64 that means true ambient temps out side the cage probably a few degrees cooler. if you lose the light like most on here are going to say at night. i would buy a ceramic and keep it to where the upper part of the cage will be around mid 70's at night.

hanging sideways...sure she is not scared? i recently bought some young panthers and they will position themselves on the other side of my finger to break the line of site between us. has she literally tried to drop from your hand when holding her? i also notice hanging sideways when basking.

gapping....the temps mentioned dont make since to me, maybe she is hot.
 
Also here are some adjustments that need to be made to your chams Husbandry.

Also you should be gut loading your crickets with leafy dark greens, such as kale or mustard greens, vegies and fruits, oranges, apples, carots, sweet potato, and others.

Cage Type - Screen. 48" X 24" X 24"
Lighting - Basking and Red lamp. 12 hours basking 12 hours night time You need two types of lights 1) 5.0 UVB linear tube florescent bulb such as a reptisun. The UVB helps chams to metabolize D3 which aids in the obsorption of calcium. Without this it causes MBD which is a debilitating bone disease that can lead to death and other problems. 2) a Dome lamp with a regular incandescent household bulb for basking. Do not use a heating bulb at night because chams don't like the heat and the light keeps them up at night and chams need it dark or it can cause stress. You want a 12 hr cycle of lights on and off ie 7am-7pm. A timer works really well.
Temperature - 85 at basking area and about 70 on the floor. 64 at floor 90 at basking at night. i themometers Temps should be 80-85 for the basking spot. approx 10 degrees lower throughout the lower parts of cage. As low as 60 degrees at night no heating lamp.
Humidity - 80% How are you creating and maintaining these levels? misting and lighting and substrate and plants. You shouldn't have any substrate at the bottom of the cage. Veileds can eat it which causes impaction. Also it can harbor bacteria. It's recommended to keep the bottom of the cage bare or use paper towels. humidity? Humidity should be 65-80% - Are you using live plants? yes 2 If so, what kind? golden pothos and mass cane Pothos is good. I don't know what a mass cane plant. Make sure it isn't toxic because veileds like to eat greens and it might make her sick

she died :( we put her to sleep prognosis wasnt good when she was brought in...we dont know what happened so yea thanks for the help
 
I'm so sorry for your loss. Its hard losing a pet. I knew she was in serious trouble and from the description didn't expect her to make it. :(

You had a pretty good idea of it all. Do you have any reasoning as to why you forsaw this happen? Could be a good insight, if you wouldn't mind :p
 
The owner said..."she is gapping her mouth and we can see some subtrate in her mouth her color is normal but she is just acting odd hanging rom one foot upside down rom a branch and when we hold her she just lays on her side but grips onto our fingers"...the biggest giveaway is that she is laying on her side gripping their fingers...but hanging from one foot, gapping with substrate in her mouth are also bad signs. I wish I could say why it happened, but there are jus too many possibilities.

If there is a necropsy done, it might give some ideas.

Again...sorry for the loss.
 
I'm so sorry for your loss :( But, you did bring her to a vet to get the best care possible and I commend you for that.
 
now i see posts about hiberbation and im freaked out but idk the dr said it didnt look good she was on oxygen and i thought she had died on the car ride there b.c she excreated and let out a hiss but im thinking she was egg bound but i didnt have $200 or an x-ray and i also didnt do autopsy but i did offer to cut her open when we brought her back home but my boyfriend (im his girlfriend logged on to his accont on here) said to let her Rest in Peace so we just buried her poor little girl i felt horrible for her but i honestly feel she was egg bound there are no other symptoms that match what she was doing such as no weezing as with upper resp infect and no vomit/weight loss as with parasites so idk we wont ever know but she was an awesome girl and i miss her dearly:(
