Here's my two cents. Obviously the leg is swollen. If your sure it's not mbd, the next logical conclusion is gout. The catch 22 on this is gout is caused by a build up of uric acid. Uric acid is the by product of protein break down that is secreted in the urine. If you are experiencing increased uric acid levels, the kidneys are not functioning properly. Over time, uric acid will deposit in other organs causing multi-organ failure which will lead to death. Common factors of decreased kidney function, I believe pretty much everyone is aware of are: chronic low level dehydration, dehydration, dietary insufficiencies, feeding insectivores too much protein. Blood levels will show where the uric acid is at as well as the shape of the kidneys. Be sure to ask for these tests as well as others the vet may suggest. And yes, uric acid in the joints is indeed very painful. Ask anyone you know with gout!! Good luck.
