my chameleon E.D had a check up at the vets on monday, we were instructed to monitor her trying to eat crickets and to feed her some wax worms to keep her strength up. I noticed yesterday her legs becomin a bit swollen and now the back legs look alsmost as if they are becoming 'flat'. Just ten minutes ago she fell from her perch!! (she goes to bed at 6 and i checked to see she was sleeping at 8) she was still asleep when i went to pick her up and it wasnt until i got her in my hands she woke up!! im very worried and i have read about MBD.
im still waiting for a new UVB light which i believe has been the cause of her recent eye problems, but the vet said on monday all but her tongue was ok an im really worried, how else can you tell that your cham has MBD!!?!?!?!? :(

I have a standard viv, not sure the actual measurements its very tall and quite wide (its the same as she had in the pet store)
the light is a kind of squiggly one and she has a heat lamp also, the light is on from 8-4 everyday.
she has a small fountain for her to drink from and also for humidity which is cleaned daily, i dont know what the actual humidity level is and i have never seen her drink.
the live plant she has is a hibiscus rosa.
her viv is in a small corner near a window for natural light.

She is a veiled yemen chameleon, and is roughly 12-14 months old and i have had her for 5 months.
i handle her daily, she tolerates it for the freedom to move around.
she is eating size 6 brown crickets, she didnt take to any kind of locust or mealworms, she usually on a good day eat 6/7, on a quiet day she wil have 3/4. they are gutloaded and calcium dusted with an exoterra chameleon dust.
she was tested for parasites by the pet shop and clear, she has a white runny and a firm dark brown faecial whcih is regular to the amount of crickets she eats.
only background information i got was that she didnt like being handled and hissed a lot, and that she'd often hide away.

i cant get a picture on the pc right now.

This are problems ini your husbandry. She may have MBD from lack of UVB.

the light is a kind of squiggly one These kind of lamps are harmful to chameleons and cause eye damage. Please replace with a linear UV florescent light and she has a heat lamp also, the light is on from 8-4 everyday. UV lamp should be on 12 hours/day. I don't know if you have a red heat bulb and think that it is for basking. Please specify if you have a basking bulb.
she has a small fountain for her to drink from and also for humidity which is cleaned daily,NO NO NO. Fountains are not good for chameleons as they breed bacteria. Chameleons don't drink from standing water but from misting and licking leaves and branches. i dont know what the actual humidity level is and i have never seen her drink.

her viv is in a small corner near a window for natural light. Any sunshine that goes through plastic or glass does not give your cham UV, just some heat.

Are you using any type of bedding? The floor of your cage should be lined only with paper towels and picked up every day or two after she poops. Substrate can be injested causing impaction and also is a harbinger of bacteria since you would have to clean it out and clean the cage every time they potty. Also, crickets will get into it and poop .

PLEASE get some pictures posted so we can see your cham. It is important.

You said that the light is "a kind of squiggly one and she has a heat lamp also, the light is on from 8-4 everyday"...I have used the Repti-sun 5.0 long linear tube UVB light for years and I use a regular household incandescent bulb (not the spiral type) in a hood for a basking light.

You said..."she has a small fountain for her to drink from and also for humidity which is cleaned daily"...I don't recommend fountains because they are hard to keep germ-free.

You said.."her viv is in a small corner near a window for natural light"...there will be virtually no UVB received by the chameleon when the light passes through glass....but the intensity might do her some good. I hope its not chilly at night though.

You said..."they are gutloaded and calcium dusted with an exoterra chameleon dust"...what do you use for gutloading? What is in the chameleon dust in the way of calcium, phos., D3 and vitamin A? How often do you use the chameleon dust?

A picture might help.

You said she fell....does she have straight arms or does it appear that she has and "extra elbow" above the real one? Legs? Does she lift her body or hold it close to the branch when moving around? You said she is having trouble with her tongue?? Did the vet take x-rays?

Does she have a place to dig in case she has eggs to lay? (They can produce eggs even when not mated.)
