help for oustalet’s, not eating

Yes that's sad, i definitely don't want that to happen. I'm going to do my best to help this guy get what he needs. I've been reading everything i can find on these guys. I hope to be an excellent owner for them.

Glad to see that you care, oustalet's are said to be hardy chameleons. Just give them what they need and they should thrive. They tend to be very large and docile. Before I got my Parsons I was thinking of getting one myself. I'd like to see more people on the forums keeping them for sure.

I feel your pain, mulan just went on a hunger strike for about 3 days. when I got her I hadn't done my research, which btw u will find very little on oustalets. I belive Kin gave me the advice to use panther cham care, but a little warmer, as these 2 both inhabit the same geographic locations. I recommend getting a digital temp/hygrometer with probes, it's nice to know exactly what ur basking spot is and to be able to read humidity at different spots. I'm still working on a lay bin for her, which u will need to start thinking of shortly too. there's a bunch of posts with the links for the chameleon safe plant list if ur worried about that.

Not the same care advice. You should find plenty of good information if you do your research. There is a Oustalet's chameleon breeder, I don't know his/her name, but I think @jannb knows.

I got them at a reptile show. I just didn't realize about the different care for different types and the cage thing, i mean i thought i was talking to an expert. She told me what to get, etc. But i got this. I've ordered a new cage, bigger. So hopefully it comes soon.

I have not had time to read all of the post but if you have not already, you need to get fecals on them both. Parasites can cause them to stop eating especially cociddia. Parasites can also kill them if they go untreated. My oustalet male eats everything put in fromt of him, always. Their care is the same as a Panther chameleon except they need a large enclosure as adults.

Yea I'm gonna find a vet tomorrow, i don't want him to go too long without eating something.

Came home and found them like this together though, so he has moved around at least

You said..."Do you have some kind of bucket to put them in with food? I'm just thinking I'll have crickets hopping all over the place if i try that hahaha!"...I always used large size pet cages like these...the ones in the top row on the right to keep crickets in.

You said..."i also just got a nighttime heating lamp for them so they're in the dark tonight" that's good.

You said..."And the kitties won't break in, they're just curious but i am still thinking of moving them"...you won't believe how many people say this and find out they're wrong.
You said..."they'll have access to a window for sunlight" any light that passes through glass will not contain useful UVB light and you need to be careful not to overheat then cages.
.

Thanks jannb

And to the other one, i went and found a cricket house yesterday so I've got them in there eating, so they'll be ready for the chams tomorrow! (At least the girl if the other still won't eat, sigh)
But hopefully the vet will figure out what's wrong because i really feel like there's something health wise. I'll let you all know what they say.
And we have screen windows, but it's not too hot out yet here plus I'm constantly monitoring the temperature.

Altho i am finding it hard to keep the temp up right now even in the day because it's been so chilly out and also in my house. I did put some plastic on the sides of the cage but anyone have suggestions on how to warm it better? The light is brand new so i don't get why it's not hotter. It gets to 80 sometimes, but seems to stay more around 70.

You can add another incandescent household light to the top of the cage in another hood to make it warmer....or increase the wattage of the one you have if the fixture will allow that. Just make sure the chameleon can't burn itself on the lights. The proper temperature might help the one that's not eating too depending on what's wrong with it.

Oh true, i should have thought of that. The bulb in there says only 60w. I'll go get a stronger one. I know the temp can make them not eat but the female does fine and i know he's bigger but still i feel like something else is wrong. We've got an appointment for 11 so I'm going to find out to make sure. He is also looking dehydrated now too, and I'm pretty sure he only drank that 1 time. I've been misting them but maybe not enough. I've got a fecal sample too so hopefully the vet will be able to help him.

Good luck at the vet keep us posted. As mentioned try like a 75 watt bulb or so to get the temp high 80s at the basking spot. As long as the cage doesn't drop below 55 at night no need for night time heat source. Reptiles do well with temperature swings from day to night. I would put them in the shower for 30min-1hr once a day for the time being. Or if you get a mistking just let it soak them for awhile.

if you just want to bring up ambient temp I've always found the ceramic heat emitters to be nice, however they won't recognize it as a heat source for basking.

I read on here sumwhere, when I was worried about dehydration, that u you can monitor how hydrated he is by the poop. ie the white part should be white, not yellow or orange. but with them in the same tank prolly hard to tell which is which.

ps good luck at the vet
