Hello, my name is Gary, I originally hail from the Philadelphia area but now in Maryland for now. I currently do not own any Chameleons but I am planning to purchase either a Panther or a Veiled very soon so, I want to research what I need as far as set up before I purchase my pet as I know very little about Charms.

I currently own a Beardie, several different species of snakes and many different species of Frogs. I also own and run my own Reptile forum/website and FB Page and a PS3/PS4/PC Gaming Forum but I wont publish the link publically until im sure of the rules for that here but my url is in my profile.

I'm anxious to join in on discussions with both feet and meet you allas soon as I look around and get acquainted with the site.

I hope to make many friends, thanks for allowing me to be a part of your community.

Hello and Welcome to the wonderful world of chameleons!

They are a lot more work and stress than those other species of reptiles and amphibians but well worth it. They are amazing creatures.

Veiled vs. panther? You will get so many answers to this question it will make your head spin. Some are very partial to the panthers while others love the veileds. I have had both and they are both amazing species. In my experience, the panthers are more docile and colorful, while the veileds have more personality but there are always exceptions to the rule. They both make amazing pets.

If you decided on a veiled I would try and get a hold of jannb asap because she has some wonderful veileds from a great lineage.

Good luck!

Thanks so much for the welcome and reply, I have tons of reading and research to do before I buy

Any questions you have don't hesitate to post. People on here have so much information.

Have you bought any of your equipment yet? We can prob save you $ and time if you want help choosing the right stuff. Most chain pet store employees do not know that much about these reptiles.

Depending on the age of the Cham you buy, you will need a smaller cage for a younger individual. That cage will be too big for a baby or juvenile to find food. It should be workable for a adult male panther or veiled

Thanks, the two Charms I have been watching at my local Mom n Pop store are both adults or close to it, I feel they should be big enough but this enclosure that I have and want to use may be partitioned off by 1/3 increments

Are you going to buy two Chams?

Noooooooooooo ! LOL, just one but I haven't decided what to buy yet, there's a Panther and a Veiled I'm looking at, the decision hasn't been made yet. I want to get my setup done first, that's why Im here !:)

But once I become a seasoned handler and owner I hope to get more.

It's an addiction, that's how I was when I got my first Cham.

The main thing you will need to think about is drainage. It is one of the more difficult aspects of preparing a new enclosure. There are a lot of threads regarding it, just do a search.

The other thing I would think about is getting some nice live plants. I go to various nurseries and try to find a schefflera arbicola that fits the cage nice. They add several pothos to fill in the other areas. You can use artificial vines but I find that a few horizontal branches do the trick.

Lighting is also very important. For a cage that big I would go with a dual or quad t5 setup. You can go to lightmyreptiles.com, Todd is great and will help you out. I have the dual fixture with the Arcadia bulb and a bulb for plant growth.

Awesome ! Thanks, I tend to go overboard with my existing reptile enclosures, I want to do this one right !
