While I haven’t had any hawk moths, I have had lots of silk moths. The silks will squirt out pheromones as their whole purpose is getting a mate and breeding. The pheromones of silks are harmless to chameleons.
That explains the new smell in my garage After about two weeks of pupating I go through the dirt and remove and dead guys. It makes for a more successful process.
If they were safe beforehand, I don't see why they wouldn't be. Same substance was/is there—it's just a question of whether it's inside or outside of the moth/larva. IOW, it could have squirted out as your cham was in the process of gnomming.
