lol they dont like to be held, especially the little guys, so they are going to run. I am pretty new to this as well, but you have to be really quiet and patient. I started hand feeding, then just working on getting my hand closer to Claude (I would only go as close as I could with out making him run, have to go at thier comfort level or they wont learn to "trust" you) It takes a while but now he will let me get him out, but you dont want to handle them all the time. I got my guy out today, and took him outside for maybe 15 min, let him crawl around in a small magnolia I have, then brought him back to his cage, that way he sees I am not going to hurt him and he gets to go to fun places with me! He still trys to run though, you just put your hand in front of them, under the chin and I coax him forward with my other hand. Just be gentle! Screameleons have a good video on how to handle chams on their site. Check it out, and be patient! I also find it goes better when it is just me and Claude in the room...he is not so fond of my BF or my dogs!
Many chameleons are more approachable outside of their cages than in for whatever reason. As long as you can find a way him to get him out of the cage, then I wouldn't worry about it. Be glad you can handle him at all!
