Handling your Chameleon.

I think it's fair to say that most people want a chameleon that LOVES to be handled. Why not? Humans like being affectionate to the things they love and part of being affectionate is touching or holding the loved one. One of the rules I constantly see here is that "Chameleons don't like being held". I always hear that it stresses them out and that stress could lead to other things.

I hear that most chameleons don't like being held anyway, but this is oblivious to me because my Sebastian LOVES being held. He would wait for me in the upper right side branch or if he saw me coming, he would immediately stop what he was doing and crawl up to that branch. But I didn't write this post to tell you that, I wrote this post because there is a downside to a chameleon that likes being held.

"Holding a chameleon stresses them out" - I think when I don't hold Sebastian he stresses out, and I don't get to hold him often. Some days he just sits there all day, eating only things that come near him, he'll hunt when hes STARVING, but I'd say about one day every two weeks, he'll just sit there and stare at me.

Forget about hand feeding, when I stick my hand inside Sebastian's cage, he just climbs on it.

I've thought of many ways to discourage this. He lives in a fully decked out Reptibreeze XL (2x2x4) with lots of plants and constant misting of warm water. I thought he might have an exploration stage, and free ranged him outside, but due to a few falcons in the area, I've stopped that. Even with free ranging outside, he crawls back to me.

I wanted to relay this information for those who think that your chameleon is less favorable because he/she isn't as sociable as you would like. Although it IS awesome, I wanted to let you know there ARE downsides to this. Not all things convenient for you, are convenient for your chameleons. My emphasis is on my chameleon being stressed out because he LOVES being held and I probably handle him only once or twice a day, he wants it 24/7 even when he sleeps.

Hyperion wants food more than anything! Since I've started free ranging him he seems to be getting less tolerant of people who aren't me. He used to climb on people he 'knew' but now he wont.

It's aweful trying to put him back when he doesn't want to go back. He generally never uses his nails to grip you (unless climbing vertical) but when anyone tries to put him back when he doesn't want to, say good bye to your hand! Wounds galore!

I don't really like to handle my chameleons, so it's annoying when he tries to climb out of his free range to get to me/a person.

Beautiful boy!

My Ambilobe Songbird LOVES to be held, he breaks the mold I swear!

I agree though it is cool at times he can be a handful especially when I don't have time to bring him out. I even tried to free range him only to find him EVERYWHERE in the house lol. Nothing like standing there then feeling a little chameleon foot grab the back of your leg lol.

Wouldn't trade him for the world though:D

My boy neptune will climb down his tree and on to my head. He probably only does that because he either is getting fed or going outside. But other than that he seems to enjoy being held.

Where did you get him? He has some great colors.

I got him off Lancecham. He is a Salvador baby; Salvador is sired by Todd M. Keller =P.

Salvador is a yellow body blue bar Ambilobe. Some of the other members on this forum have one of his babies. Sebastian's girlfriend just had two clutches =P

He's beautiful!

I'm always going to say that it's better to have a cham that is too social and wants to come out all the time, than a cham that is terrified of you and can't get far enough from you. Fear is a much more damaging stress than just wanting to come out.

Ive never handled my chameleon yet since i only got it about a month ago, its about 3 months now, if you wanted to handle your chameleon so that it will get used to being handled say like when you clean your cage or changing it around because you are adding something in. Is it better to start sooner than later?

definitely the sooner the better....maybe start by hand feeding him so your cham understands you are the food source...it will be much harder for him to get used to you handling him if he gets older without ever being handled.

ive hand fed him a couple of small silkworms, but he doesnt do it every time. Sometimes he sits there and looks at the worm, then at me, then back at the worm lol, and ive actually sat there for minutes on end waiting for him to take the worm off my finger but sometimes it never happens and my arm starts to get tired. I then put the worm on a leaf and he goes and gets it after a little lol. hes probably sitting there laughing at me because hes making me wait :p

I wish my new guy liked to be held.....He is 5 months and have had him for about 3 weeks and he just cringes when I come near the cage. Just seems he doesnt like or has had little contact with people.....I hope that will change. It will kill me if he never likes me :(

my chameleon is soo wierd.........(-_-)

whenever i try to hold dynamite, he always fires up and gets all mad and stuff, but the moment i get him on my hand he totally calms down and turns a lime green color. so i assume he likes being handled? but not the process of him getting on my hand.:p

He is probably defending his territory. Once he's on your hand and out of his cage he knows there is no point in fighting.

When I was hand-feed training Sebastian, I would litterally hold hold my hand there untill it was trembling, I found that having a stand for your elbow works wonders. He didn't used to be this way. He would shake and puff when I touched him. When I first brought him home I was obsessed, I would lie near his cage and stare at him for hours and even fell asleep a few times doing it. Sadly he is blind in one eye. I only assume so because one of his eyes ever dialates, it just stays small. It moves just like a normal eye, but it just stays the same shape/size. Nonetheless I let him crawl everywhere when ever I have the chance.

interesting way to put it....

never thought of it that way, but i hardly ever handle him anyway...

Some males just go through a phase or "puberty" and then they grow out of it. I have a male that would lunge for my fingers, now he's almost a year and is mellowing out.

lol yeah i did that when i first got mine :p i try to rest my elbow on the table the cage is on but sometimes hes farther back in the cage so i try to hold it closer and makes my arm tired. Im going to try tomorrow to see if my little guy like being handled haha

I handle frequently all of my free ranged chams. Especially my Nosy Be, Will. I was just down visiting Dr Alfonso on Friday with Will for a well visit. He saw how I interacted with him and I asked him if he was stressed at all. He said he absolutely was NOT stressed by me. He even thinks Will is more laid back that Jann's Luie! He said Will is incredibly comfortable with my handling and kissing him. Dr A also said Will was super healthy.

I had a receptive female Nosy Be with me as well and Dr A showed her to Will. Will studied her for a little while, then reached for me and laid his face down on my cheek. Dr A laughed and said I can forget mating him, he has decided I am his mate. LOL I tried again today to show Will the pretty girly cham, he did the same thing.

This chameleon thinks he is a dog. He will climb down his vine and sit beside me on the couch and hold my finger with his little hand, while watching TV. If that's what handling your cham and free ranging will do, I'm glad I did it. ;)
