Half Asleep

I've noticed that my Cham sleeps with one eye lid open and the other closed. This is clearly abnormal because both should be closed. Is there a problem in this case because I feel that I should ask about something like this..

When does it happen? During daytime or when the day is almost over?

What kind of light do you use? (heating and UVB)

What are the temperatures?

I use the UVB tube, red heating bulb and a normal heating bulb. This happens when he closes his eyes so when he sleeps I notice it.

Get rid of the red heating bulb!!!!! You don't need that. That might be the reason why the eyes are half opened.

Yeah get rid of the red heat bulb, if you need a heat source, get a ceramic heat bulb, but remember it is usually preferred for night temps to be 10 degrees cooler or so.

it may not be the light, you guys went way off topic. just because of a light....im sure many of u use red ones as well for various other animals...i had a female veild that prefered the red light....basically there is most likely a foregin object in his eye that is preventing him from closing it properly..try flushing it at least once a day preferably bfore bed time to ensure the cham sleeps with his eye closed...with any abnormal activity if it persists or fails to improve at all seek vet care.....also try searching for similar problems you usually find answers there faster along with what others vet said and the outcome of the situation.

use plain saline solution which you can find in wal mart for $2.50 for the equate brand in the eye care isle

What do you mean I flush it? You want me to flush the chams eyes?? It's only one eye that has the lid a little open. It's like someone sleeping with his eye a little open so you could think he's awake just dozing off but they're really sleeping... This is not both eyes it's just ONE eye.

Chamster, Courtney is kinda right we did kind of choose only one side of this, but to "flush" its eye, just use the dropper that comes with the saline solution. Also do you mist or spray your Cham? This could be a weird thing you cham does, but it is more likely something is causing its eye to stay partially open.

One more comment...the ceramic "bulb" would not replace a basking light. A basking light need only be a regular household incandescent bulb in a metal hood. The wattage is determined by the temperature required in the basking area.

So you're saying I should have the red heat bulb for basking that k have plus the ceramic bulb plus the UVB the I have ?

No, all you need is a UVB tube light, a basking light (75 watts or whatever fits your needs), and then nothing for the night, unless your night temps are cold enough to need a heat source then that's were the ceramic bulb comes into play. You shouldn't need a red light bulb. Hope this helps!

OMG... everyone keeps telling me different. I just need ONE PERSON to tell me ONE THING.

I thought I needed the ceramic bulb.

NO light, red or otherwise, at night. A ceramic heat emitter is only if your room temps drops to low in the room with your chameleon over night. Usually below 60. You want a natural drop in the temps at night. About a 10 degree drop.
