Has anyone ever seen these beauties for sale anywhere. I don't know if they are a protected species or if they can be imported but they are very cool. For anyone who owns the Chameleons of Madagascar DVD you know what I am talking about I am sure. Just wanted to see if anyone has seen any breeding projects for them.

They were banned from export from Madagascar in 1995 and have not legally left the country since. There were some illegally shipped to the US in March of 2002 in a shipment that was seized by the USFWS and then distributed to various Zoos. The Buffalo Zoo a couple years ago had the last of the F. balteatus from that shipment but I do not think they have any left. At the time they had one on display and a few behind the scenes.

Chris,

I am so glad that you are on this forum. You are a plethora of knowledge. I have read more useful and intellectual posts from you than anyone. I did actually see that they were banned in 1995 when I went to the species list on the forum. Thanks for the information. I am just always looking for other species to keep. I just bought some Mellers from Chuck G and I am hoping to get some Parsons within the next couple of years. Fingers crossed...

Yeah, in Germany I could get even legal ones ! :D But I haven't enought money for them:eek:

At the risk of sparking an intense polemic, would you be so kind as to elaborate on your definition of "legal" as it relates to the trade of prohibited (CITES Notification 2009/003), CITES II, species of chameleons from Madagascar?

Are these from Timo? Judging from some of your past posts concerning Calumma boettgeri I think you probably know the likelihood of F. balteatus being "legal." ;)

Oh, to answer the OP, I've seen balteatus for sale....in 1993 and 1994.
