free range?

i was even considering kinda seeing up the tarp with some stuff under it & channel it into a tray or something. i see the too much water being an issue. it seems like the droplets need to be big & bounce the leaves around alot to trigger my guys want to drink. so ya i could see the water running over the tarp. im gonna try some things out this weekend tho. ill let everybody know what works for me. so what do you guys think tho? hes getting old. he was somebodys breeder for a good while, than he was in a pet shop in a tiny tank for a good strech of time too. now i have him. not long ago he wasnt respnding to anything. i took him to the vet & started giving him some critical care powder & he came around. its just part of me thinks this would be great for him, part of me is worried he wont take very well to another change in surroundings.

Last time I suggested laying down a tarp, I was told it wouldn't work... Too much water or something.

Oh, I should have mentioned...you need to make a "dam" to hold the water on the tarp. What I did was roll up the edges of the tarp to form a sort of berm around the perimeter. Or, you could put get some pipe insulation and roll the tarp edges over it like a low edged bathtub. Then just mop or sponge up the excess water.

what do you do about them shitting all over the house?

First, most free range chams spend almost all their time in a familiar territory. If you design a clump of plants under basking and UV lights, feed them there, and their needs for height, water, heat, humidity, and food are met, they are going to stay in that area. Chams don't poop all that often either. I've found they often go after they warm up in the morning, start moving around, eat, and then settle in a favorite perch for most of the day. Once settled they are pretty predictable.

I don't get how anyone does free range. I'd be so scared it would decide to walk and climb where ever it wanted and I'd never see it again!

Free range probable doesn't work for everybody [other pets, household dangers from lamps to vacuum cleaners, etc] but mine has worked ok so far. The only thing is their unpredictable. You set up elaborate vines and settings and they go elsewere. i set up a vine across a west window for sunning and i never saw him use it. He preferes to squeeze himself between blinds. Mine always sleeps in the same hanging plant and spends much time there or sunning on the blinds. His feeding cup is his other favorite hangout. I think if you can watch them carefully the first few days you'll have a good idea if it will work or not.

i have seen some crazy set ups form this forum .. is it better to do in outside or in your house?

Personally, I would not have a free range outside if that's what you meant unless I had a screened in porch that was cham proof. IMO, panther's are more curious and do tend to explore more than other chams.
