First mantis!

My Melon ate his first mantis today, let it free in the cage- He stalked and caught the mantis in mid-flight. Then realized it was longer then hes used too, took him about a minute to chew through it.

Definitely going to start buying ooths, can anyone recommend a certain sub-species that's easiest to work with? I'm considering breeding and feeding off Orchid Mantids, I was going to choose between Orchid Mantids and a Chameleon as pets....

Now my Melon is gonna eat the other choice? :)

I would go with some other kind. How can you feed something you wanted as a pet, that is going to be hard. Also orchids don't produce lots of babies do they? i would look more at Chinese mantis. But I don't know a lot about mantis, just the ones I have had. Good luck.

If you can find them, ghost mantids. They aren't canibalistic but they only do 30ish per ooth. Get a few going and you should be good for a colony

I do like ghost mantids, Orchids are my favorite but probably harder to keep right off. Also, I love my chameleon more then mantids so it'll be easy.

Thanks for the responses, I think ghosts will probably be the way to go. Chinese produce around 200 an ooth, I'd be killing off too many I'd think.

I don't think ghost would be the way to go IMHO. Ghost will blend in, and look like a leaf to a chameleon. So unless you train him/her to eat them, or your chameleon likes to eat leaves, ghosts are not the best choice.
