Finally Got Dubia Roaches!!

ISA my Veiled

New Member
So I went to Sewerfest with my wonderful girlfriend and my two best friends and oh my god!! That expo was amazing, that was the first one we have ever been too and it was fantastic, so many things it was just overwhelming. So I was walking by this one stand and as advertised for 20 dollars I got a starter colony with a ton, seriously probably 150 roaches. They are indeed freaking but I realize how much it is worth it. So I am setting up my colony at the moment and seriously wish to know everything about them to make this a success. If you guys could hook me up with a guide that would be amazing! Thank you!

Congrats! Guide coming up... ;)

-Temp: 85-95 degrees F
-Humidity: around 30% (will be created from oranges, etc.)
-Hides: Egg carton, paper towel roll, etc.
-Diet: Oranges, apples (+ many other fruits), greens, sweet potatoes, carrots, oats... anything else cham-friendly.

-Scientific name: Blaptica dubia
-Location: Tropical Latin America
-Life expectancy: 1-2 years
-Birth to adult: approx. 3 months
-Dimorphism: Adult males have full wings. Females have wing stubs and are darker in color.

Sorry got a little carried away lol... and that is totally ironic, considering I got a starter colony of about that amount for the same price. :p

Sounds awesome!

One other thing I forgot to mention... keep a ratio of about 1 male to every 3 females. This will keep the fights between males down.

I suppose I will have to sort through them tomorrow and make a bin or two more just to make sure. I don't want to ruin this, how long you think I should let it sit?

Lol it would be pretty hard to ruin a roach breeding setup xD

But seriously, you might just dump them out in a clean tub and get a good idea. I usually only see females out... I will see males every once and a while. Take a picture of them when you do this. In a few weeks or next month, do the same thing and compare the two. When the colony doubles in size, you should be steadily growing. (You can feed a few off to your guys to see how they like them.) :)

I will go ahead and do that tomorrow then, I just put some Mango in there for them lol they keep walking up to it then running from it.... OH how insects are so intelligent

I am expecting a shipment of Dubia tomorrow.

If oranges and apples are used for food is there any need for water chrystals for hydration?

Thanks!

from what my good friends on the forum tell me no you wont need any of that if the fruit you are giving has enough water in it.

Congratulations on your roaches. UGG. I haven't worked myself up to them yet. I have just come to terms with silkies and my butterworms came today. Don't think I will go the roach road any time soon.lol

Yeah they can get rather creepy lol but honestly are the way to go,after a few months here I will never pay for a food item again unless I need super worms or something in that area. they are really worth it seriously. You should look into it.

I would need to keep them in the garage and it gets too cold where I live. That's my excuse.lol I might think about it next summer. That way it gives me a years therapy before I take the plunge.lol

Good call, Dubi's are a great feeder much better nutritional value for your chams that crickets but still use both variety is the key to a healthy cham

Are they adults because i got about 300 Medium sized from dubideli.com for about 30 bucks, but they took forever to mature, like several months. Now after a few months after they mature my colony went crazy like about 1,500 crazy! I predict in another couple months it will become a fully established colony.
