A couple of pics of what I believe to be a female with a brood pouch! Looks like I might get babies sooner than I thought! :D

Cool. Can you take a few pictures so I can see if we have anything like it over here? You have lots of fun bugs.

They are quite fascinating Laurie! They are actually crustaceans and have 7 pairs of legs! I have two tubs of them now, so hopefully I'll have a lot of babies soon for Monty to gobble up! I will get some more pics for you of them the right way up, lol! :D

Are those chameleon safe? It looks like the shells would be hard to digest.

We have tons here, we call them "sow bugs" in our neck of the woods and they are under just about every rock or log.

They are very crunchy (according to Monty, not me!) and can be offered as treats. I am attempting to breed them so I have a plentiful supply for Monty. Since they are part of the crustacean family, they are a good source of calcium. Be careful not to feed too many straight from outside though. Woodlice are Monty's (my Xanth) absolute favourite!:D Here's a link to my video of him helping himself from the tub! You can hear him crunching one up, lol! :D

Aw that video is simply adorable! Monty sure knows how to work the camera! ;)

For Laurie!!!

Here's a couple of pics of half the colony. I have two separate tubs of them as I collected so many! Laurie, I think they are referred to as Sowbugs in the US. To me, they are woodies, lol!

I didn't know you could use those as 'treat' feeders! Those little guys are so awesome I don't thing I could feed them off though

You can breed them - I followed sandrachameleon's blog. They aren't good to feed too often though, but you can see in the video how much Monty enjoys them when I offer them! My Veileds were never interested in them at all.

Thanks Tiff, they are sow bugs or rollie pollies . I will try to collect them this summer. I knew you could help.

They look like P. scaber. They are pretty common in the US (and in all different parts of the world.) We have some around where I live that get up to an inch long (P. laevis)

Rollie pollies are usually the kind that roll up. Often A. vulgare or other closely related species.

They do look like rollie pollies maybe a little bit bigger? These little guys are in the front yard of my work!

We have the two types here - woodlice and pill bugs (roly polys). I tried Monty with a roly poly once, but he zapped it, it curled up and rolled back out of his mouth before he had chance to chew, lol! :D Pill bugs look slightly different and they tend to have more shine to their backs than woodlice.

Under rocks, logs, leaf litter, etc. they prefer rotting wood/leaves, and compost-y areas that are damp.
