Female Nosy Faly Panther, swelling around neck.

Hi guys I recently got a female panther in a trade. Since I have had her, her neck has been swollen and I want to know if this is serious or not.

PLEASE DO NOT ASK ME TO FEEL OUT A HOW TO ASK FOR HELP, I just got her and my husbandry is correct as my 30+ other chameleons are fine. She has had it since I received her today.

Get back to me please. I will hopefully trade her back if I need to do a vet visit because I planned on receiving a healthy chameleon in the trade not trading then spending 1k on vet bills because I got the bad end on a trade.

Thanks guys, pictures are below.

My thoughts were wrong supplementing or feeders that were on a very high protein diet, such as roaches eating dog food or something of the sort.

The swlling could indicate a tongue infection or respiratory one, not shure. Is her tongue extending normally or does she have trouble with that? Hope she is fine.

Very strange, I no animal protein can cause mouth problems and such but ive never seen anything like this before, could it be down to bad lighting issues, lack of d3? Some kind of metabolic bone disorder? Very sorry anyway but I would probly be inclined to send her back if that is a option. Like you say it can cost a hell of a lot

That looks like it could be guler edema. It can be caused by a vitaminA overdose or could be associated with egg laying. Also on the worse end of the spectrum it could be a symptom of organ failure. Here's a link from chameleon world about edema

If you are not willing to take her to a vet then I would suggest giving her back to who you got her from and hopefully they will take her to be seen to.

It is definatly edema. A build up of some kind of fluids. My females usually get some edema which I believe is caused by their egg laying cycle. If she were mine I'd stop all vitamin supplements and just give her calcium without D3 for a few weeks and maybe some liquid calcium and plenty of outside time. If it's not to hot where you live some direct sun if it hot keep her in the shade. Natural UV works wonders on these guys.

Is this something that can go away?

Also I was told that she was on a regular calcium supplementing regiment. But if she is going through organ failure that pretty much means its fatal and I don't have the extra 1k to spend. I thought she was going to be totally healthy when I got her as I traded top notch healthy babies. Thanks for the information guys.

Gular edema goes away with fluids, and less supplementation.

Ive heard that the females can get edema when they need to lay eggs.

Pretty much it goes away on its own, but you have to reduce the amount of supplemenets you give her. I wouldnt change the schedule, ,just dont dust as much.
Just a suggestion.

I second this... as i have seen this on some of my females. When i do i stop supplementing completely until it goes away. It should take a few days.

Gular edema, definately. As others have stated its fairly common in breeding females. Ive had my breeding females get it also. Usually goes away within a cpl of weeks. She looked to be in good shape except for the edema. Its not a deal breaker in my opinion. Its something thats easy to fix if you know what your doing with females. No supps for awhile for her. Just extra hydration til it goes away. Mine often get it right before laying a clutch. Are you sure she doesnt have a retained clutch in there?

Also the boy has it that I got in the trade... :(

So bottom line, I need to decide whether to trade back or wait a few days and see what comes of it and then possibly trade back.

I am sorry guys I don't want it to look like I am cheap, I thought I bought completely healthy chams because the photos showed nothing of it. I just have to go back to college soon and can't drop 1500 dollars on two chameleons for vet bills/surgery on chameleons I thought were to be of optimal health.

I also REALLY APPRECIATE EVERYONES help!

she doesnt need surgery or a vet visit right now.

gular edema takes time to go away, it wont be gone in a few days.

especially since in her case, its fairly advanced. but it also wont kill her.

as weve all said, no supplemenets for a while.. lots of water.. it will go away eventually.

To my best knowledge she has never laid, I will get a laying bin in there with her and dig a starter hole. I will cancel supplements for a week or more and make sure they are eating crickets that are strickly on flukers cricket diet and fresh vegetables as to keep it simple and clean for gut loading. I do not want to try a crazy gut load yet as I think spirulina and maybe to much might not be good for her right now.

I agree, it does look like Gular Edema. Jan is right about the natural sunlight working wonders. My boys cleared up within a week.

They get direct sunlight in the morning then sunlight thru breaking in the leafs on the tree. Should I go for more direct sunlight? I just don't want them getting to hot.

So stop all supplements? Even Calcium?

I wouldnt let her get too hott, sounds like she can get filtered sun which is great. I stop all supps myself when I see edema in my chams even calcium. It wont hurt her for a cpl of weeks.

I may think about getting an xray done to see if there are eggs. But I will most certainly be getting an egg laying bin. If anything it is an unfertile clutch.

Just check her for eggs and cut the supplements. I would give it a few days like a couple people said. After that it's vet time. Def let the person know who you traded with man! You shouldn't be responsible if this is the way you got her. :)

My male ambanja had this. My vet stopped all supplementation. Crickets were only gutloaded with veggies and fruit, no artificial supplementation like Flukers or Cricket Crack. I also had to up his misting and humidity (hence the Reptimist I was talking about that got bashed). I followed my vet's directions to the T and it has gone away. She said it was not gular edema - it is not in the gular region, that is under the chin. Anyway, do what you will, that is what I did.
