My poor jacksons are getting bored with crickets and meal worms. They go nuts when I find them a cockroach. Is there anyone on Oahu who sells more exotic feeders or anyone who ships live to hawaii?
Nope sorry, most feeders are tropical so if they get out they are not a pest in the states. On the other hand you can grow your own roaches. a roach is a roach. Gather some up, put them in a bin with food and cardboard play pen, and enjoy.
Hawaii has termites. Make a termite trap- take a 4" pvc pipe a couple feet long, drill many holes in it on all parts of it, bury it 2/3 of the way into the ground in the forest- preferably near a rotten log where termites are already found, stuff it full of strips of cardboard box, dampen the cardboard with water, and put a pvc end cap on the top. Come back in a few weeks, pull out the cardboard and maybe you will have termites in there- lots of termites. Lizards love termites and they are very nutritious.
Chameleons also love flies- you attract them to the cage with something smelly (fish head in a tiny screen box in the cage so the flies can smell but land only on the screen box?)
According to north carolina state university, they also have soldier flies wild in hawaii. Soldier flies are another word for phoenix worms and reptiworms and calci-worms. Soldier fly blog and youtube have instructions on how to make a soldier fly bucket harvester and how to attract flies to your harvester so they lay eggs and then you can harvest the worms to feed your lizard. It is really easy and I had a *lot* of fun with mine this summer (I was a little enthusiastic and made a 50 gallon garbage can into a soldier fly farm).
