DIY Misting System / Humidifier!!!

HI all,

Just thought i would tell you all about my DIY misting system that have managed to put together for less than £25!!!

I have connected an argos Humidifier (http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/4250344/Trail/searchtext>HUMIDIFIER.htm) to some 19MM piping with a couple of T links and set it on a timer.

It is fully automated and seems to work just as well as the one from the shop priced at £100.

I will see if a can put some pix on for you if there is anyone interested in it?

Also i have also build a DIY rain maker!

I will upload some pics in about half a hour.

I glued the 19mm pipe to the humidifier's outlet on the top.
Drilled 19mm holes in the top of the Vivs
Run the pipe into the three vivs using a series of T connectors.

Photos to follow.

One question for you...can you disconnect all the tubing and pipe to clean and sterilize it periodically? You can end up with mold or bacteria buildups over time especially if water pools anywhere. Using RO water in it will help a lot. You need to keep the nebulizer disk clear of mineral deposits or it can damage the fogger. I run a bleach solution through the whole setup followed by a cycle of vinegar to keep it clean.

I've built similar foggers over the years. They can really help create a more natural humidity cycle during the day (more humid in morning, drier during mid day, more humid in late afternoon). Earlier cham forums often talked about a "Johnson fogger" also built from a humidifier, pvc pipe, flexible tubing, etc. Lately I've begun using more flexible pool tubing instead of rigid pvc pipe, but that would depend on what you have available locally.

HI Carlton,

yes the pipes are fully detachable. Every month i disconnect the piping from the humidifier and connect it to a non-chemical steam cleaner and leave it pumping hot steam through for around ten minutes.

I have had this setup for three years and never any bacteria and or green slime etc block or build up in the pipes......I also change the piping when i do my yearly check (changing the UV bulbs etc) every 12 months.... Works a treat!!!

...... Just to mention i do this obviously without the Cham inside the Viv

:)

These are the pics...... The misting is only after it being on for 45 seconds!!

Works really well and you only need to change the water weekly. :)

Looks great, are you using any type of filtered water through the humidifier, or is it just standard tap water? (our tap water down here is pretty poor, so filtered water is a must)

Hi,

noraml tap water in the UK is fine. I do however mix it with a chem to reduce the hardness of the water.

Thanks:)

I wouldnt recomment pool tubing and this allows water to collect in the groves and is very hard to clean. :)

I've had no problems either using the RO water. Also, the more frequently you have to run the system to keep up humidity the less time water sits, so bacteria growth is lower. Probably wouldn't use this on a cage that only needs fogging once a day for example.

I totally agree!!!!!

I would recommend this type of setup for a few Vivs and possibly a few mists a day.

My humidifier is adjustable so you can turn the intensity up and down to get the precise amount of mist.
