Distilled Water

So I use only distilled water for my misting. Is buying a distiller for 150-200 dollars worth it? Is there any other cheaper way to get the water. Currently I buy just gallons of distilled water at kroger for 65 cents a gallon but I got through about 10 gallons a week.. It's adding up. Any suggestions? Thanks!

prob not a bad idea, soundz like it will pay for itself... i use r/o water. you may want to chack out r/o systems as well.

I use RO water for both my misting and rain system (having just recently changed from tap water because I dont like the build up of mineral deposits on the glass), my chameleon drinks from this. My only issue with RO water and im not sure if its even an issue... is it's "pure" water, there are no minerals or salts containied in the water (litterally just good old H20). I dont know where you live in the world, but most tap water is ok. If you are unsure take a sample to a tropical fish store and get it tested for chemicals and PH etc. The only issue with tap water is it often contains minerals which cause things like a build up of limescale which leaves a horrible stain on the glass if you use a glass enclosure and is a pain to clean.

Alternatively you can buy something to stick on top of a saucepan and boil the water yourself.. the steam evaporates and runs down the tube leaving all the minerals in the pan... I have seen one of these before... no idea where to get them though!? That's the only thing I can think of... otherwise you will have to fork out for it... these are one of the things that aren't cheap and you dont want to buy a cheap one becuase it will most likely do 1/2 the job.

Definitely compare the cost of a distiller and an RO filter unit before buying one. There are RO units that fit under sink cabinets easily. Compare the cost to actually run it (electric). The RO water will be as just as good.

RO water is not as "pure" as distilled water. It will still have trace amounts of inorganic minerals unless you use a pre-filter combination to remove them. That's one reason it doesn't taste flat like boiled water. I don't know if commercially available distillers all boil the source water, but essentially distilled water is pure because it is just re-condensed steam and has left everything other than H2O behind.

Definitely factor into your decision the cost of operating the distiller. It can be as much as 30 cents a gallon. RO systems, I believe cost significantly less per gallon.

Ro systems need to replace filters ect. I just quit and started using my tap. Ill replace a mister head or clean it when the time comes.

My buddy bought one about 4 years ago. Counter top model about 175.00. Best move he ever made. It makes 4 gallons a day tastes great and has payed for itself. That is going to be my next purchase I am tired of all the plastic bottles and it will pay for itself.
