well... what an interesting trip to the vet. the carrying box I made worked great. He was safe for the 20 minute drive and could move around. the vet... well thats another story
after having to tell my husbandry to the vet tech, i waited 10 minutes to see the vet. it wasnt one of the two vets they told me i would see... so off the bat i was questionable. after she asked me about what was going on, mainly on the tongue issues she asked if she could examine him. i could tell she didnt really know what she was doing, and she grabbed him from his back... and I rarely have him puff up at me, but he was hissing and trying to bite. she looked quickly at his eyes, touched his legs, and then forced his mouth open to check in there. she commented on how strong his jaw was, and then proceeded to ask me how i was supplementing calcium.
She suggested for me to put the calcium in with the crickets rather than dust, an opinion i frankly took with a grain of salt... she told me that the tongue could be linked to mbd. then she told me the drug she wanted to administer, septra. i told her i had already done some digging about how harsh septra/albon/bactrim were on them, and told her id prefer if he went on ponazuril. she was pretty snappy with her response and said "then you tell me where you can get it". I mentioned compound pharmacies, and she left to see if it was available. she came back quickly and said she had found it and was going to get a quote.
the good news - im getting ponazuril. the bad news is the smallest amount they could give me was $130. on top of the $100 "examination" she completed. I ordered it and she left the room and that was that. she never mentioned anything about coccidia, how he could have got it, how to clean or what to do... just that i would have to pick up the medication when it came in. what a great vet!
