Cross breeding

I have a baby male Ambilobe Panther. In the near future I was planning on getting a female Nosey Be. Does anyone have a photo of those two mixed? Are they popular?

I was also wondering if it is possible to breed a Veiled and a Panther together. I highly doubt it, but I haven't seen anyone mention it.

Yes you can breed different locales together. AmbiXnosy be crosses are rather common and their value is much less than a "pure" animal.

Veileds and Panthers are not able to produce viable eggs when bred together. They may breed, one may lay eggs, but they will not hatch. They are not closely related enough to do so.

Much less? Depends how you're measuring the value I suppose , I have seen them cost more than pures often times. Just look at the Kammers site Chameleons Only. Yes if someone is breeding a pure lines those animals are of no value to them but not everyone breeds or could care less to. Seems the opposite around here though:D

The kammers are very professional, and good breeders. They can sell theirs for that much. Plus look at the lineage. They have a lot of locales crossed to the point where they have 5 or more locales in one chameleon. A person who is breeding for the first time with no reputation of breeding will not be able to sell them for even close to that much.

Kammers are the exception to the rule. They have a highly respected "name" in the industry. So they in turn can charge more for all their lines than most hobbyist breeders can. That includes their crossed bloodlines. And their crosses are some of the best in the US. Im not a crossed locale fan but theirs are really spectacular. Just throwing two diff locale chams together and hoping for Kammer quality is quite a stretch.....;)

As Kara has stated, you can.

I have a Panther Cross. 50% Nosy Be x 25% Ambilobe x 25% Ambanja Panther Chameleon.

They make some amazing blends of colors, but many people prefer pure locales so when the females are older they don't get passed off as one locale and contaminate the pure locales. If that makes any sense.

You're both right. I was just trying to show there is hope:D Kammers have great animals and worked very hard to get where they are today id imagine with their animals. I never said it was quick, cheap, and easy.

Ahh, I see. I think a Nosey Be and Ambilobe mix would be awesome, but thats only my opinion. Thanks for the responses. ;)

Look up Sandrachameleon, she breeds this cross so there are photos of her gorgeous males in her albums of threads.

It's just a female thing. You will undoubtedly be selling some to people that will resell them, or to pet stores, and so on. They can and will be sold as Ambilobe because there is a bigger markup and demand for those rather than Nosy Be.

So it can potentially screw with someone's breeding plans down the line, who you have nothing to do with yourself.

The MALES however, are great because of the crazy coloring, and 90% of people buying chameleons just want them as a pet and could care less about the locale, they want color only.

So it's catch 22. You will probably rarely if ever get another breeder buying from you, unless they are also crossing x crossing x crossing....so you have to be diligent in making it clear to people who buy from you that they are mixed locales, otherwise it will end up looking bad on your reputation.

This. This exactly. It's important that you should always notify the people who are purchasing females of the lineage and make it clear that you would never want them to be misrepresented in any way.

I just looked her up, very beautiful chams she has!

Very useful, I will keep that in mind for sure, when the day comes that I breed my little guy. :)

Yes, they are a popular mix. However some people see any mix as less desireable than a "pure" local.
Here are some photos of ambi-nosy:

Each male can look different from its siblings. Quite exciting. Occassionally, one will look like a pure NosyBe or Pure Ambilobe, but usually they are unique.
Cross Females may sell for much less than pure breed females.

Yeah ive taken everything into consideration. Im most likely staying in a house or apartment with my friends. :)

Just remember that you'll be in college and wont have as much time as you need. I tell you because as you know, I go to UM and it gets crazy sometimes between school, the tons of hw, chores cause I stay at home and my chams. Also remember that your schedules change all the time and that isnt necessarily good.

Before getting a female and starting to breed your guys, get to know how college is. Not only classes, but the college lifestyle and see if having a breeding project, done right, is in not only in your, but more importantly, your chameleons' best interest. Eventually you'll see that it isnt easy. I knew what breeding my veileds meant, and I knew it'd be a lot of work.. its much more than you expect, specially now having classes again.

I don't mean to rant or "burst your bubble", but I think you should really learn about what it takes to own a chameleon and learn what it takes to be a good college student (not necessarily the best, but not mediocre either), to see if you are truly ready for such a thing. Also consider that it is not cheap. You'll spend more on the babies than you'll do in books for your first semester. Not cheap. Really do consider everything before going into it.

Wow, very helpful post! Thank you very much. The mixes you have are beautiful.

Im okay with then selling much cheaper, im chosing to possibly cross breed them because I would really like a Nosey Be.

Thats actually very true. I should (and now will) wait till my classes start to make a move. It would really suck getting another cham, and then have it be too much work to cope with. Ill wait till im settled in my apartment or house, and then if I think I have enough free time with my schedule, classes, school, etc, ill get one.

I don't consider you bursting my bubble or ranting. I think you're just making me open up my eyes to whats coming-which is a good thing. ;)
