Coccidia and Baycox

My 7 month old panther was just diagnosed with coccidia and the vet prescribed him Baycox. So I'm just wondering who has any experience with Baycox and how well it worked battling the coccidia.

Howdy Brad,

I've been under the impression that Baycox isn't readily available if even available at all in the USA. Baycox (Toltrazuril) is used outside of the USA to successfully treat coccidia in reptiles. From talking with one of my overseas vet friends, I'm told that it is a bit tricky to dose. If you get it wrong, things can go bad for the reptile. Ronidazole is another one that I've read about but don't know much regarding its application for reptiles. We've had very good results with Ponazuril. We get our local vets to order it from a pharmacy in Arizona that compounds it to the proper strength for a total cost under $30 for a zillion doses .

Hey Dave, I thought you would be the one responding after reading all your great posts on coccidia. Also, you are correct, its hard to get in the states and I had to sign a waiver at the vet for it. He assured me that it's safe and he seems to think its the best thing on the market for coccidia. He has me dosing him 9 "units" for three days, then two weeks off, then three days again. To put dosage to perspective, he weighs 85g.

Do you recall the strengh of the Baycox you were using?

To get Baycox into the US it has to brought in illegally from canada.

People do it, mainly in the horse industry, to treat a neurological disease called EPM which is due to a protozoan ... but it literally has to get smuggled in.
