Current Problem – my male chameleon shed earlier this week and towards the end one of his eyes closed. Today is the third day and I have been closely monitoring his eye, it does not appear to be weeping, swollen, disfigured in any way just closed, i can see the eyeball moving around inside. He has still been eating normally. I have increased misting and used slightly warm water this morning, I will be taking him to the vet today if it has not yet opened.

Just wondering if anyone has experienced this, or if they have any idea of what might have caused it, how serious it could be, how to prevent it?

this is my first chameleon and his first shed, i have a female also who shed a few days before, though it took her only 1 day and didn't seem to bother her at all.

Does it keep its mouth open like that most of the time?

Is the light a compact, spiral or long linear tube light?

The most often recommended UVB light is the long linear fluorescent Repti-sun 5.0. Some of the spirals, compacts and even some of the tube lights have been causing health issues often involving shutting the eyes.

Every shed is different. After only a year with chameleons, I'm sure that's true. I notice he is shedding. I'd give him every opportunity to rub his eyes as possible to see i maybe one of those many shed things I see is, in fact, a little thing near an eye.

It's also possible that there's a bit of shed freaking him out. I've seen my little girl react badly to a bit of shed that came within eyesight...she totally did not get that it was part of her...it was just some weird looming thing.

Based on the pictures, there is shed within eyesight and as much as we love them and want to think they are smart...they can be afraid of their own skin.

I'm quite sure a million experts will tell me how wrong I am...but when one of mine seems to be troubled by shed issues, I take it out and handle it...force it to crawl through my fingers and out of my grasp (mine are small)...that usually takes the bit of shed that seems to be the problem off. I don't pick...it just rubs off. I then return it to its cage and we both pretend nothing happened.

he isnt shedding anymore and it is still closed though, that photo was taken yesterday morning, i will try and get another close up photo this evening.

and thankyou for the bulb advice, is that a brand thats available in Australia? I will change it tomorrow as shops are closed now.

Is he rubbing his eyes on branches or bulging them in and out as if trying to clean them? You can help him clear any left over bits of shed by increasing the misting or flushing the eyelid with sterile saline solution (the type that is safe for eyes such as contact lens rinse without preservatives). I don't know if ReptiSun 5.0 tube lights are available in AU, but you could ask your shops.

he is not rubbing on anything to try to clean it, not really behaving anyy differently at all, last night i gave him a good mist with warm water but his eye is still closed. I got some pics of both eyes last night too.

his good eye open

he has been up for a few hours now and I think the warm water helped a lot last night, he has been blinking the eye a lot and keeping it open for short periods.

I am going to get crickets and ask bout the reptisun globe so i will get some saline solution as well thankyou.

J & D, sent you PM. Depending on your state, I can give you the name of a vet. Please respond My Pm at soonest.
cheers :)

Jerry's eye is open! he opened it about 4 hours ago and it has stayed open since. Here is a new pic of his open eye, i think it looks fine?

he has been opening and closing his eye all day since, do you think thats a good or bad sign?

Well..it's way better than it being closed, right? I'm sure it will take a while to work out the stiffness that has to have set in when the eye was shut for so long.

If he's still blinking weirdly after a day, it would probably be good to take him to a vet.

I would watch him for a few days-he might have had shed in there.

YOU NEED TO ADJUST YOUR SUPPLEMENTS. You should only be giving vitamins 2-3 times a month at his age, adjusting that back to 2X monthly at 6 months of age, and then 1X monthly. You can cause issues by giving too much vitamins. Where is your calcium? It is essential at this age to be supplementing with calcium to avoid the possibility of MBD.
