Chameleons highlighted in the April 2013 issue of Reptiles mag

Very nice article by the forums' Kent67, in the April issue of Reptiles Magazine. "Beginner's Guide to Chameleons". Well written and really spells out the ABCs. Great pics, too. We will definitely be linking to this on our website once it becomes available online. (Looks like they currently have the March issue available on the Reptile Channel website.)

Thank you very much. Unfortunately, I STILL haven't seen it! Apparently subcscribers got their copies last week and I've been sent photos of the cover but that's it. I signed up for a subscription and should get two additional comp copies but....nothing yet. All the local stores here still have the March issue, too. Can't wait to see it in person!

Well, the article is in the center fold. It's not a centerfold pic. In looking at all the pics I thought they were submitted by Mike M. and/or you. They're nice, reality pics for the most part. Not polished fashion pics. And not field pics. They look like real pics from chameleon owners. With the exception of the first, large, intro pic, which is staged, and has photoshopped background, but still very nice, real looking chams.

On a side note- two of the pics show chams on someone's hand- and Chuck G will be very glad to know that the persons' fingernails are spotless! :p

I just read my copy today on my lunch break, and was pretty sure it was our very own Kent who had written it. Great job on the article - it was quite informative and a great intro for people thinking about getting into chams! :D

How many people saw what I did? The guy talking about his pet stop and how great he is with reptiles, talks about the panther he is holding. He is holding a Melleri. Guess he really does know his chams.

Kent your article is excellent. I enjoyed your view of chams over a span of time. Also Nice pictures.

Yes! that's what I was referring to below- the item on page 12. But it's hard to know if the error originated with the magazine or the store owner. The caption "This panther chameleon is one of many great reptiles found at ......" is a little bit ambiguous. Did the store owner actually submit that pic or did the magazine need to fill space on the page?

I saw that too, and just attributed it to a careless error on the part of the magazine, using filler.

I PMd the owner of the reptile store via their facebook page. The magazine placed that caption on the photo. Fortunately, Kent's chameleon article seems to have accurate captions.

That is pretty sad when a reptile magazine doesn't know or care enough to caption pictures correctly. I hope a new reptile keeper does not use all of that misinformation as a guide to decision making.

Got my copies from the publisher! With my articles they sent me proofs of all the photos with captions so I was able to edit anything. The Ambilobe pic originally had a statement about cross locale panthers, for example.

Thanks, Laurie! I thought it was important to show that much HAS actually changed in the hobby even if chams still have the "difficult" label. It was kind of my philosophy/challenge years ago when I started that some species would be more difficult than others but that they couldn't all be so "expert only." Then, after a couple years, veileds became available through Ron Tremper and solidified that belief/prediction. Starting with healthy animals, understanding what they need from/in their environment, and consistency in care equals successful keeping.

Just to clarify the pet shop in the mag was very misquoted.i am the marketing director for the store. The owner of the store is also the owner of the NJ reptile and pet expo April 7th at the teaneck armory in teaneck NJ. I assure every one that the magazine miss quoted them and did not research what chameleons were what the store was asked to email pictures and the mag took it from there. The picture of the owner is not the owner they really butchered the article and embarrassed them selves. As far the store goes I can assure you all the staff is beyond knowledgeable of every aspect of the animals and supplies they carry. I would not work for them if they were hacks these people are on point.
