Chameleon shooting at the rocks again

My Jackson chameleon is shooting his tongue at the rocks I have in one of his plants. He is just over a year old eats everyother day and eats well gut loaded roaches and worms. Should I not loose sleep over this or should i feed him everyday? He only seems to do this on the days I don't feed him. I am pretty sure he must be shooting at gnats but I can not tell to be for sure. I know I have gnats but don't ever see them in the spot he is shootig.

Make sure that the rocks are large so that he can not get them in his mouth. My daughter loss a cham due to it eating a rock out of the plant.

Are the rocks wet when he tends to do it? Shiny droplets or grains of mica can attract their attention. As long as he can't pick the rocks up or swallow them probably not a big issue.

try larger rocks that he cant eat.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Went and got some even bigger rocks just to be 100% sure that he can not get any of them in his mouth.

my question would be what kind of lighting are you using ?. if you are using a cfl then rocks may not be the issue at all (if you are using a cfl then it could be the onset of possible visual problems)

Get some sand and put an inch layer of it over the dirt then put rocks back on top, prevents gnats from living in it and the rocks prevent him from eating sand. This will knock out the possibility that he is just trying to eat a tiny gnat. The sand doesn't allow bugs to live in it because after it is watered there are no air pockets in it allowing the bugs to live.
